I stayed in Liverpool's new Radisson RED hotel and 'the interiors were stunning'

Radisson RED has officially opened its doors in Liverpool, in the city’s North Western Hall next to Lime Street train station.

The Grade II-listed building was originally designed by local architect Alfred Waterhouse in 1871, and has since undergone a massive renovation project. A number of its original features have been preserved and restored, including a nineteenth century stained glass window and a stunning sandstone staircase.

Once a hotel back in 1871, the building became derelict until Liverpool John Moores University took the building in 1994 to turn it into student accommodation.

Fast forward to now, and the building has been fully renovated by Radisson RED. The hotel opened on December 13 2022, and I was lucky enough to stay the night there.

The interiors

Speaking to the ECHO, general manager Gary Waring said: “We really wanted to protect the original features of the building. It would’ve been a hell of a lot quicker if we just covered things up, but instead, we’ve got the original stained glass window which was renovated by a local company. We've refurbished the grand staircase in the lobby, the original fireplace, the original flooring - it’s all been lovingly restored.”

As soon as I stepped foot into the hotel I was blown away by the interiors. This hotel was seriously stunning, and offered the perfect mix of classic and modern. The staircase for me was a real focal point, which was complimented by the incredible original stained glass windows behind.

Gary continued: “It’s a building that links so strongly into the city with its arts and its building and its fashion. I love the brand, it’s perfect for Liverpool.”

In terms of aesthetics, I’ve never stayed in a hotel quite like this before. Naturally, the newly renovated building looked fresh, clean and polished, but it didn’t look too artificial.

Sometimes when a building is renovated, it almost takes away all its characteristics. With this hotel, the renovation just seemed to add more, especially with the artwork and original features such as its own red submarine.

The rooms

Room choices include Standard, Superior, Superior with a St George’s Hall view, Family Room, Premium Room with St George’s Hall view, Junior Suite, Suite and a Family Stay (2 connected rooms).

I stayed in the Superior Room with a view of St George's Hall, and the view truly took my breath away. For me, the combination of such a classic building mixed with the modern interiors in the room was a real winner.

I really liked the quirky features in the room like the old black telephone on the bedside table and the huge printed photograph above the bed. Everything looked clean and fresh, with a hint of old school.

The bathroom was modern and spacious with a gorgeous marble effect sink area and a great backlit mirror - which was ideal for applying makeup. I had no issues with the shower, and the shampoo and soap that was provided smelt amazing.

I loved the addition of the Nespresso coffee machine in the room, but I sadly didn’t know how to use it. That was a little embarrassing on my part considering I actually have one of these at home, but some instructions for an airhead like me would’ve been a nice bonus.

The bed was incredibly comfortable, with a mattress that was on the firmer side, with crisp white bedding for that really modern aesthetic. I didn’t find myself feeling too cold, or too warm at any point, and I truly slept like a baby.

Although I didn’t get to watch the TV during my visit, there was a big Samsung TV in the room which was a nice extra. If you’re visiting here for work or just fancy sticking the telly on whilst you’re getting ready, it’s great that Radisson RED have provided guests with a modern TV to kick back and relax.

The verdict

I was actually amazed with how stunning this hotel was. The incredible exterior of the building matches the inside of the hotel, which offers unique and timeless features that not every hotel can offer.

I particularly enjoyed the fact that Radisson RED has a self check-in system. Guests can check in online and check out from anywhere in the hotel.

The service was impeccable, and every member of staff was so friendly. General Manager Gary Waring wanted staff to offer “typical scouse hospitality” and they most certainly did that, and more.

Whether you live in the city and fancy a change of scenery or you’re coming from further afield, I’d highly recommend the new Radisson RED hotel in Liverpool to anyone. Not only is it absolutely gorgeous, but the staff are very welcoming too.

The hotel also has a ‘Stoke’ restaurant, which is described as a ‘modern ground-floor barbecue style restaurant’ with a robata grill. Stoke has always gained an array of five star reviews from visitors, and after sampling some small plates from the menu myself, I can confirm that the food is delicious.
