'I spent the whole of Ed Sheeran's Cardiff gig waiting to propose to my girlfriend'

One music fan sat through Ed Sheeran's sell-out show in Cardiff anxiously waiting for the perfect moment to propose to his girlfriend of two years. After waiting for most of Ed's set with sweaty palms and shaky legs, Scott Beynon eventually plucked up the courage to tell Stacey Layton to head to the front of the row.

He'd already found a "random guy" two rows in front to film the proposal when he "gave him the nod". Read about another gorgeous moment when a woman proposed to her partner at the Ed Sheeran Cardiff concert here.

The 34-year-old home insulator waited until Ed Sheeran was halfway through his 2014 hit Thinking of You before getting down on one knee. "I remember singing that song to her," said Scott after the show explaining why he'd chosen that moment.

The crowd cheered and whooped when Stacy said yes, before she hugged her now-fiancé and the couple, from Knighton in Powys, took a private moment swaying to the music.

Scott and Stacey, who met through a mutual friend during the very first lockdown, are expecting their second baby together in September. Having initially dated online because of the coronavirus restrictions, Scott said it was at least a year until they had their first "proper" date together. Stacey, 31, had been "dropping subtle hints" said Scott, who's brother is getting married on the first weekend of June.

"I thought the Ed Sheeran concert would be the perfect moment to propose," said Scott. "She loves Ed Sheeran, I thought it would be just me and her, it would be perfect." Although he admitted he had to down a couple of drinks beforehand for "Dutch courage". You can read our review of the show here.

He happened to get talking to a fellow fan sat a few rows ahead of them on the Friday night show in the Principality Stadium and had asked if he could film the moment he asked Stacy to marry him. "I said can you do me a favour," said Scott. "When I give you the nod, can you record it on my phone."

After leading Stacey to the front, he swiftly got down on one knee and popped the question. He'd had a heart-shaped trinket made, with Stacey's name engraved onto the top, to store the ring safely inside.

He said the whole experience had "restored his faith in humanity": "It just shows the power of a social event where everyone was friendly and trying to help me make it our special moment," he said. "It restores your faith in humanity."

Luckily, Stacey said yes and the couple couldn't be happier. "She really had no idea," added Scott. "She knew I was up to something but wasn't sure what. She knows me far too well. She couldn't believe I had chosen to do it on that date. It's one of the happiest times I've seen her." They plan to wait a year or two before setting the date for their big day.
