Eurovision’s impact on Liverpool has stretched far beyond the song contest itself - and Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s performance today proved that.
So many of Liverpool’s institutions have stepped up to hold celebrations of their own. So many musicians not connected to Eurovision have been more than happy to perform.
Today we had yet more evidence of this, with John Lewis’ massive department store in Liverpool ONE putting together an incredible party in their kitchenware department. And it was Sophie Ellis-Bextor who stepped up to the plate.

Sophie didn’t sing too much herself, although her performance of Groove Jet near the end was special. However, it was great seeing her dance on the impromptu stage with the models from the store’s fashion parade as well as patiently working her way through autographs and selfies in the crowd.
Commenting on the unusual nature of the performance, Sophie joked: “We always end up in the kitchen at a house party anyway!” Murder on the Dancefloor was a popular choice amongst the daytime homeware ravers, as was You To Me Are Everything by The Real Thing and Come on Eileen.
It again emphasised how music in this past week has extended beyond the Eurovision entries and touched every genre, from Cydini Lauper to Joy Division. A special shout out must go to DJ John for this, with a superb range of songs.
The fashion show was also a great touch and gave the performance something very unique.
The only complaint was how hot it was. With the kitchen department packed out and the temperature seemingly turned up to max, Sophie said: “How is everyone doing in the UK’s hottest kitchen?”
Then again, when hasn’t an amazing gig left you a bit sweaty at the end? In the John Lewis kitchen department, Liverpool showed how it can be united by music. That would have sounded a little strange before Eurovision season kicked off.
