'I revisited a West Country pub lunch that took me back to childhood - and it still had stunning garden'

We all have memories of impressionable outings as a child. Whether it's picnics on the beach or hilarious visits to safari parks - some trips will stay with you forever.

And revisiting those spots as an adult can feel incredibly nostalgic. Below, Somerset Live reporters Heather Pickstock has described what it felt like to return to a favourite pub that she dined at almost every week as a child.

While lots of the venue has changed, its stunning garden, complete with a bubbling stream, is still the same. Read her full review below.

As a child, we'd often go to Riverside Inn in Cheddar as a family. I remember sipping a glass of coke and downing a packet of crisps by the stream running through the pub garden, it was a regular weekend outing.

Fast forward a good 40 years and it was time to revisit, this time with my own little person - my four-year-old goddaughter and her mum. Obviously the pub, which sits at the bottom of the gorge, has seen many changes over the years.

But its pretty garden, complete with its stream was still there. Just as I remembered it. I popped into the bar to grab a drink before meeting my lunch dates. The staff were friendly and quickly took my order.

As I was driving, I opted for a diet coke and was a bit shocked at the price. £3.25 for a half which I thought was a little excessive.

I just hoped the menu wasn’t as pricey. I needn’t have worried as the food prices weren’t bad - with a selection of steaks, including a rump for £12.49 to burgers at £10.49 which included a drink.

There was also a reasonable selection of pub classics from scampi to lasagne as well as a range of small plates and sharing platters. With it being hot, I didn’t fancy a big meal, so opted for two of the small plates of which you can get three for £12.49 or they are around a fiver each.

I went for the cheesy button mushroom bruschetta and, as a lover of fish, a portion of the crispy prawns and panko breadcrumbed calamari sticks. With the food ordered, we sat in the sun where my goddaughter showed me how to play Top Trumps.

Now the pub was busy- ish - it was a summer Saturday after all, but we did have to wait rather a long time for our food to arrive. My friend had a dish of Nachos while my goddaughter had a kids' meal, so we didn’t expect a wait of 45 minutes.

After chasing up where our meals were, they arrived. The bruschetta was delicious and the cheese had a real bite to it. They couldn’t serve up weak-tasting cheese really - after all this was Cheddar.

The Nachos and the sausage, chips and beans kids' meal went down well. It even came with a pudding of Eton Mess, It wasn’t a chore when my goddaughter said she’d rather have a mint choc chip, for me to hoover this up.

The portions were good, the food was piping hot. So no complaints there. It was just the waiting time that could have been improved.

The pub also had a small play area, which the younger visitors clearly enjoyed. And it’s dog friendly too with a good-sized car park for people visiting the popular tourist area from outside the village.

Serving up a range of local ales, ciders and cocktails, the bar seemingly has endless options, including nationally and internationally recognised beers, lagers and wines. It also serves barista-style coffees and hot drinks.

The pub hosts live music, rock n roll bingo and quiz and games nights. The Riverside Inn was a nice spot to enjoy a leisurely Saturday summer lunch - followed by a trip up the gorge to buy my goddaughter that promised mint choc chip ice cream.
