'I regret my baby's name 9 months in - it doesn't sound right in my northern accent'

Choosing a name for your baby can be pretty difficult and even when you think you've settled on the right one, you still might end up finding yourself having some regrets.

This is the situation one mum claims to have found herself in, nine months after welcoming her little boy into the world.

The unnamed woman took to the internet to explain that she liked her son's name, but that she didn't love it and was struggling to come to terms with wishing he had a different moniker.

In a post on BabyCentre's Baby Name group, the parent explained that she'd wanted two different names for the baby but her partner hadn't been keen on either of them.

She wrote: "Okay so I feel like I might be being a bit dramatic but I'm finding it hard not loving my son's name (he's 9 months). My daughter is Violet and we both agreed on it straight away I loved it from day one and never imagined her as anything else.

"My son on the other hand I wanted to name Casper and my partner didn't like it.

"When he was born I really thought he looked like a Rex, my partner didn't like that either. He wanted Oscar which I didn't like. In the end we went for Leo which we liked for a boy when we were having our daughter. It's the only name we both agreed on."

The mum went on to say that to make matters worse, she's "not keen" on how Leo sounds when pronounced in her northern accent.

"I do like it I just don't love it. I'm also not keen on the sound of it in our northern accent. I can't help but keep imagining him with a different name."

She added that they definitely aren't going to change the name, but asked fellow parents if they'd experienced something similar and whether she would just eventually come to terms with it.

One person responded to say they think it was a "boy name thing" as they'd had the same issue.

They said: "I think it's a boy name thing! I spoke to my friends about this before as I'm really struggling with boy names.

"Girls' names are so pretty and so many options whereas boys' names you just feel more forced into choosing the best fit. I think you'll start to love it when he starts to do more too, a baby could really have any name as they don't do a lot but as he gets older and you have to use his name and shout his name more I'm sure he will feel more like a Leo."

Someone else commented: "If you have no plans to change it at some point you'll end up accepting it although there's a chance you may never love the name as much as your daughter's.

"I didn't love youngest's name but it has grown on me and can't imagine her with any of our other choices. In the beginning, though it took getting used to. She loves it so that's what’s important."

While a different user added: "My little girl will be 10 months tomorow and I had some serious name regret at the start.

"She's our third and the one that we struggled to name. We knew we were having a girl but even though we knew, she still didn't have a name for a few days after she was born. My hubby wanted Robyn and although I like it I just wasn't sure if it was right for us so said we would both have to find something we both liked equally.

"That turned out to be Lilith. It's an unusual enough name I suppose and we both loved it, but it got very mixed reactions when we announced it, which ruined the name for me.

"It got to the point where I'd dread saying her name. I really wanted to change it and asked hubby could we change it to Robyn, but he felt I might regret it down the line. She was about 8 months before I fell back in love with her name. I'm so glad I didn't change it."
