'I refused to wait for elderly woman on an elevator - I'm impatient and in a hurry'

A man has cruelly admitted that he refused to wait for an elderly woman on an elevator due to being in a hurry.

Taking his confession to popular forum site Reddit, the user divided opinions after claiming that he was 'impatient' after waiting 20 seconds for a family's grandma.

Explaining that he approached the elevator while on vacation, he detailed how a family of five stepped in and left the man puzzled after they blocked the door from closing.

The Reddit user explained: "The girl stands in the doorway with her hands on her hips. I make eye contact with the father then the mother then the girl. Ten seconds pass. I look at them again with a puzzled expression. The girl says, 'We're waiting for Grandma!'"

They went on: "Five more seconds pass. So I say, 'The elevators are really fast here. (& They are) You don't have to hold the elevator'. The mother says, 'We all want to ride with Grandma'. A few more seconds pass (maybe 20 from start to finish) and grandma gets on the elevator.

"She looks at me (we are of the same ethnicity) and asks if I am part of some organization staying in the hotel. I said I was not. Then the father says, 'He definitely isn't one of them, those people are nice...'. I said, 'I'm just in a hurry and a bit impatient'.

"I certainly could have patiently waited for Grandma but it seems rude to jump onto my elevator and make me wait for Grandma to come out of her room. & Then say I'm not nice!"

Seeking advice, the man questioned: "If they had asked if I minded waiting I would have a totally different perspective. Am I the a**hole?"

Since sharing his thread, the man's post had raked in over 600 comments to date - where his impatient action divided opinions.

One person wrote: "I'm going with soft you are the a**'hole. By your own admission, it was 20 seconds. 20 seconds my dude."

On the other hand, someone else said: "I gotta disagree. Time is relative, and making a whole elevator wait 20 seconds while you hold the door is way past the socially acceptable amount of time."
