'I refuse to let my son watch Frozen or Moana, they're inappropriate'

A mum refuses to let her three-year-old watch Disney films - because she thinks it’s "inappropriate" for him. The anonymous mum says “Frozen and many other Disney movies” are not recommended for viewing by children under the age of five.

She claimed popular Disney films should be watched with parental supervision up until the child is eight and says she's never let her son watch Frozen on Moana. Speaking on Mumsnet, she said: “Frozen and many other Disney movies are not recommended by Disney to be watched by kids less than five-years-old and they should be watched with parental supervision up until eight-years-old as there are some upsetting scenes.

“For this reason our three-year-old son has never watch Frozen or Moana. He just watched Peppa Pig, Bluey, Paw Patrol, Hollie and Ben.”

The mum was “fuming” after her son’s gymnastic teacher referenced Frozen during a class. She said: “I have a son that goes to a gymnastics class for three to four-year-olds with parents present.

“The instructor asked the kids last time who is the princess that likes snow and some kids replied ‘Elsa’. Then the instructor asked ‘and what Elsa does to things with the snow? They make them…’ and she then expected the kids to say ‘freeze’.

“She did all that to teach them how to ‘freeze’ and stop moving. I am fuming.

“Was it appropriate for the instructor to expect three-year-olds to have watched Disney movies in order to participate in the class? I honestly felt so sorry for our son during the class.

“He is a very reserved shy boy when in public and this whole thing just made it all even worse.”

Other mums jumped to the instructor's defence calling her reaction “bizarre”. One mum said: “If you are for real then you are being utterly ridiculous. Another said: “Really? This seems like a strange thing to be hung up on. My son loved Frozen at three. He's seen most Disney movies now at four-and-half.”

Some agreed they supervise their children when they watch Disney films and sometimes only show them parts of the films. One mum said: “I watch a lot of Disney show son clips with my son, starting when he was a toddler.

“He is now six and still hasn’t watched the full version of lots of them as he’s a self-confessed scaredy cat and has quite a short attention span. He’d be very upset with Mufasa dying in the Lion King, for example, but that is no reason not to let him enjoy “I just can’t wait to be King” – same with “You’re welcome” from Moana.

“I think it’s pretty common to introduce them to age-appropriate extracts earlier, so I don’t think it’s that unreasonable for the teacher to have referenced Elsa.”

Another mum said: “I always watch Disney films with my kids for the first time so I'm there for any scary bits but my three and six-year-olds have seen most of them.

“Not unusual at all for three-four-year-olds to watch frozen.”
