“Feeling’s Mutual”: Joel McHale Opens Up About Fist Fights With Chevy Chase On Community Set

Joel McHale and Chevy Chase had a tumultuous relationship, as recently revealed in a new interview. Light was shed on instances of physical altercations between both actors, as well as controversial remarks about the sitcom Community being addressed.

Joel admitted to allegedly dislocating Chevy’s shoulder during one of their “multiple” fist fights on the set of Community.

The 52-year-old actor reportedly made the revelation on Michael Rosenbaum‘s Inside of You podcast, where he said he included an entire chapter about “how to fight” Chevy in his 2016 book, Thanks for the Money.

Nevertheless, Joel also clarified that he and the 80-year-old actor fist-fought “multiple times” while filming Community, telling podcast host: “There was pushing and shoving, yeah. It was advanced horseplay,” as per Decider.

The Soup star recalled: “It wasn’t fun. It would get a little contentious.

“I got in trouble one time because I injured him. I dislocated his shoulder.”

According to Joel, the dynamic duo was filming a boxing scene when Chevy encouraged him to hit harder.

The comedian admitted: “He wanted me to punch him as hard as I could.

“I punched him in the hand with a left. Then he went down.”

Joel went on to respond to Chevy’s controversial appearance on Marc Maron‘s WTF podcast, during which he claimed Community “wasn’t funny enough” for him and said he “didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people.”

The Animal Control actor said: “Yeah, well, feeling’s mutual about your attitude, and you didn’t have to be there.

“This was not a prison sentence. We were not conscripted into a war.

“You were being paid a lot of money and getting free food all day long. So you could just walk away.”

Joel went on to exclaim that he would “assume” that Chevy was well-aware that “he could be an asshole.”

The father-of-one appeared in all six seasons of Community from 2009 to 2015, while Chevy was a regular cast member for the first four seasons, departing after Season 4.

Joel portrayed Jeff Winger, a disbarred lawyer who enrolled at Greendale Community College to earn a legitimate degree.

Meanwhile, Chevy portrayed Pierce Hawthorne, an elderly and wealthy businessman who also enrolled at Greendale.
