Having a guest stay for long periods can be difficult as you might start to feel like they are invading your personal space. This gets even worse when it's close family like your in-laws, as tensions can run high when they behave in ways you don't agree with. For one woman, the pressure of hosting her mother-in-law boiled over after she spotted that she'd been snooping around her belongings. She noticed some of her things had been rearranged and moved, which left her seething.
In response to this, the woman decided to lay a trap to catch out her snooping in-law but it horribly backfired leaving everyone, including her husband, livid with her.
Taking to Reddit, the unnamed woman explained that she decided to lay a fake positive pregnancy test in her bedroom as bait to see if her mother-in-law would do anything about it.
In the post, she explained: "My mother-in-law moved in with us a month ago. I began to notice my stuff in the bedroom being touched. Furniture rearranged, stuff moved et cetera.
"I figured it must be his mum walking in and snooping on my personal things. I told my husband and he said his mom would never."
She went onto to explain that she laid a fake positive pregnancy test in the bin in her room to see if her mother-in-law would notice. Little did she know that the prank would turn into a total nightmare, as her fake revelation unfolded with friends and family.
She said: "Literally the next day after I got to work, I got tonnes of calls and texts from my in-laws congratulating me for my pregnancy.
"My husband came over to my workplace and was all worked up about it asking since when I was pregnant, and why I didn't tell him.
"I asked how he found out and he said his mum found the positive test in the bin in the bedroom."
Her husband was fuming that she had lied about the pregnancy and asked her to take a real pregnancy test just to be sure. He wasn't the only one left feeling angry, as the whole family was not happy when they found out about the rouse.
"He was livid asking how could I lie about such a thing and break his mum's heart since I know...very well that she longs for grandkids. I got a lot of this from him, his mum and family now calling me a liar and manipulator," she explained.
However, in response, many were supportive of her and said the in-law had acted unreasonably.
One person wrote: "Seriously, in no way shape or form is she entitled to announce another person's pregnancy."
While another stated: "No way will her husband allow that. She has husband problems in addition to her mother-in-law problems."
