'I picked a name for my daughter that sounds magical - but some say it's stuffy and old'

Choosing a baby name isn't always an easy task, and while you might be tempted to ask those close to you for their opinions on the name you're considering, you should always be prepared for them not to share the same taste you do.

And that's the exact situation one mum is facing after she found a baby name that she thought was "magical", but has had family and friends tell her it's "stuffy" and an "old lady name".

The mum-to-be revealed she's expecting a baby girl in September and wants to name her Greta because she believes the "classic" name suggests "independence and strength". Those close to her, however, don't share the same view and have advised her against using the moniker - and she's now worried her child will end up "resenting" it.

In a post on Reddit, the mum asked: "We're having a baby girl arriving in September and one of the names we are considering most strongly is Greta. To me, it's a classic name that suggests independence and strength and is a little bit magical. I honestly just love it.

"However, opinions here and elsewhere seem to be pretty split. A lot of people like it, but it seems like just as many find it harsh, or stuffy, or an old lady name and really dislike it. I am not all that concerned about everyone loving the name, but I also don't want to give our daughter a name she might resent. Especially since there aren't really any obvious nicknames for it.

"So, if your name is Greta, what do you think of your name? Do you like it? Do you wish your parents chose something else for you?"

Other women named Greta were quick to take to the comments to help the expectant mum, with many of them saying they actually like their name, as it isn't too common but it isn't complicated for people to understand or pronounce.

One person said: "Greta here! I was the only Greta I've ever known until recently. It does seem to be making a small comeback, I've heard of several toddlers named Greta.

"The only minor downside is that no one remembers my name. I get called every other name that starts with a G. It actually doesn't bother me at all though. I feel like they're at least paying attention enough to know that my name starts with a G. My family and friends call me Gret, as a nickname."

While another added: "I didn't like it when I was younger, and I spend a lot of time correcting the spelling (it's not Gretta) and clarifying that no, it is not short for Gretchen. But. I have grown to love it as I got older. I can't imagine having another name. It just took me a few years and getting more comfy with myself to fall in love with it completely."

And several people who aren't called Greta also replied and said the name was "due for a comeback" and encouraged the mum-to-be to go for it.

Someone posted: "My name isn't Greta but I LOVE the name Greta and it's due for a comeback."

As someone else wrote: "It's not my name but I went to school with a Greta who was among one of the most popular girls, and she was popular because she was always nice, she was cool and creative and very smart. It's a great name."
