'I paid £2.50 for breakfast at Morrisons Market Kitchen in Piccadilly Gardens and it fed me for a whole day'

Morrisons Market Kitchen in Piccadilly Gardens is a real Manchester gem. I’ve never seen so much love for a specific supermarket on social media, but people on Twitter really love this place.

In just one short search, I’ve seen ‘stan accounts’ and people claiming how ‘great the Piccadilly Gardens Morrisons is’. One tweet even called it the ‘world's best supermarket’, while another described it as a ‘cultural landmark we should be more proud of.’

Until this week, I’d never ventured inside, always having somewhere to be or something important to do, but when I spotted a Too Good To Go bag available on the app, I figured it was as good a reason as any to finally make a trip.

For those who haven’t seen our previous Too Good To Go adventures, TGTG is a free food waste-saving app that partners with brands and restaurants to offer ‘magic bags’ of food nearing the sell-by date, for around a third of the cost. It means shoppers can snap up surprise bags of food cheaply, saving them from the bin.

My Too Good To Go bag was available to pre-order on the app the day before, costing £2.50 with the promise of £8 worth of food inside. They usually go live on the app around 11.20am, to be collected between 10.30am and 11am the following morning.

Upon reserving, the description says the bag could contain fresh juices, sandwiches, fruit pots or more. There’s the potential for some food to be hot, and others chilled, it just depends on the daily waste and what’s going out of date that day.

Venturing inside the store during the collection slot, it truly is the most boujee Morrisons I’ve ever stepped foot in. It’s got smoothies on ice, sleek self-service tills, poke bowls and an array of Market Kitchen counters where you can purchase fresh, hot food to enjoy straight away. I can see why there’s a lot of love online for it.

I made my way up to the Market Kitchen counter and showed the assistant my Too Good To Go app, swiping to confirm my collection before a green and white striped bag was handed to me. It felt heavy, which is usually the sign of a good bag, and I was excited to see what was inside.

Back home, I unboxed my bargain ‘magic’ bag and, while everything inside was classed as a ‘breakfast item’, I was able to split them into three sensible meals for breakfast, dinner and tea, since their use by dates were all the very same day.

I started with a large pot of porridge, which would have been £2 if purchased fresh. It reheated well in the microwave, and smelled amazing. I just added a swirl of honey for extra flavour, but it was proper oaty, thick porridge - not like you get in those sachets.

For lunch, I went for the sausage sandwich, which would have been £3, featuring pork sausage in a stone baked ciabatta, which featured around three to four sausages and was perfectly fine to eat cold - though I probably could have warmed it in the oven if I had wanted to. It was a bit dry, but nothing a blob of ketchup couldn’t fix.

Finally, for my evening meal, I warmed the Morrisons breakfast wrap, worth £4, in the oven for tea. The weight of a house brick, it contained unsmoked bacon, pork sausage, hash browns and baked beans, all neatly contained in a tortilla wrap.

This was by far the star of the show, and I’d have happily paid full whack for it, even if it was going out of date.

The total value of the bag had been £9 - so over the estimated £8 - saving me £6.50 on the RRP. It gave me three decent meals for the day, and none of it ended up in the bin, which is a huge win.
