'I never thought I'd see another 2012 again': Relief and jubilation as City stage incredible comeback to win title

Dark clouds rolled in over the Etihad as former Liverpool player Phillipe Coutinho made it two nil to Aston Villa with little over 20 minutes remaining in the title deciding game. The quieter cheers from the Villa support were met with collective groans outside the ground by those who were without a ticket but wanted to join the expected celebrations.

Some had seen enough and headed out of the ground. Jill Harrington and Ed, who had travelled from Cheshire and were waiting outside the ground for most of the game, were among them who made the decision that the game was over, and the title potentially heading west to Liverpool.

But the next five minutes would bring nothing but joy and relief. Moments after Jill and Ed announced they were leaving a loud cheer signalling Ilkay Gundogan's first goal rocked the stadium. The comeback was on.

Two minutes later Rodri made it all-square, and in the 81st Gundogan completed the comeback. Some who had left and others who had just arrived embraced and shouted 'City, City, City' in delight.

This included Jill and Ed who were in sheer relief. "We only made it to the toilet then heard the second cheer, this is unbelievable. We've done it!"

Oisin O'Byrne flew over from Ireland in the morning to celebrate what we thought would be a routine win. But, as he travelled to the ground on the tram City were down two nil and he thought they had 'bottled it'.

However, just second after he stepped off the tram City had pulled one back, and within minutes City had turned the game on its head, and had one hand on the Premier League trophy. "This is insane," he said.

"Liverpool were always going to win and when we were two nil down I thought that was it. I'm so glad I got here in time for this, I'm absolutely buzzing." He agreed the luck of the Irish may have had a part to play.

Earlier in the game there was a touching moment when a round off applause could be heard 22 minutes into play. City and Villa fans had come together to mark the 5th anniversary of the Manchester Arena Bombing where 22 people lost their lives.

This day was completely reminiscent of City's first Premier League win in 2012 where the club had to come from behind again to clinch the title. Sergio Aguero famously scored late on to send the blue half of Manchester into raptures.

Billy Cosgrove was at that game in 2012 and got to relive the moment again this time around with his son Fabian. While nothing to could compare to that first title win in 2012, Billy said, today was still extra special.

"I never thought we'd see another 2012 again. Just to have that moment once in your life was lucky but to go through that again was amazing, we were never going to do it the easy way.

"People always write off City saying we've got no fans or history but that's rubbish. I've been following the team since the 70s and 80s, and when we dropped down the lower divisions, and it's what makes today so special. Never give up on City."

Unfortunately the City fans didn't completely cover themselves in glory, with the club having to apologise after it emerged Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen was 'assaulted' during the pitch invasion after the full-time whistle. And at half time a City fan without a ticket climbed into the ground.

Despite this the celebrations outside the ground after the game were in good spirits with strangers hugging and cheering with each other. Noel Gallagher even made an appearance, being swamped by fans as he left the Colin Bell stand reception.

This will go down as another famous day in Manchester City's history, which has been filled with success over the last 10 years. The party is likely to continue long into the night for the blue half of Manchester.
