'I make kids follow very strict dress code at home - it's for their own safety'

Everyone has their own take on parenting - but as long as their child is happy and healthy, the technique used doesn't matter all that much. But one mum has sparked a debate online after admitting she makes her children and guests adhere to a "very strict dress code" when they're in her house.

She explained how males cannot wear anything tight and their shorts must be below the knee, with the same going for girls with an additional ban on low cut tops. The mum-of-two said on Reddit: "In my home, we have a strict dress code for men and women. It goes for anyone who lives in my home and comes into my house - and that's how its always been."

But when her daughter broke the dress code when celebrating her 14th birthday, the youngster ended up in tears after the mum made a scene.

The mum added: "The kids dad came over for a visit - we are divorced but for the kids make it work.

"It was [my daughter] May's birthday. As I was cutting up the cake for everyone, I hear 'Oh my god! Thank you dad'.

"I come back into the room to find May, dancing on the table, holding a tight dress - a skin tight, bright red dress, that shows her chest more than I'd like.

"The kids dad knows how I feel about that - and knows why."

She went on to explain how she was "harassed" by a man and woman before having children - and came up with the rules to keep her future children safe.

"I didn't say anything in front of the kids as I didn't want to embarrass May in front of her friends, mostly guys. she added. I'm more than happy for her to have guy friends.

"We went outside to play and May put on the dress along with makeup her dad got for her.

"I am very good friends with one of May's friends dad and was talking to him, and noticed his kid staring at May. Keep in mind this kid is 15."

She pulled her ex-husband aside for a quick chat about May's birthday present, wanting to make sure he understood her reaction toward it.

She said': "I explained to him how I did not approve of that clothing in my house, and wouldn't like to encourage him buying her things like that to wear outside - she's 14, not an adult.

"He got mad and started arguing with me. We are both dead set on our ways and ended up making a huge scene at the party."

Wanting to know whether she is in the wrong for having a dress code, she has taken to Reddit to ask for users thoughts on the overall situation.

In response, one user said: "I got cat-called while checking the mail at nine months pregnant. I had a greasy bun on my head and was wearing baggy sweatpants and a sweatshirt. It’s not the clothes, lady.

Another user added: "Obviously this woman still has trauma, she needs therapy more than just a dress code in her home.

A third user said: "Instead of teaching her daughter that men 'just can't help themselves', she should get her daughter some self defence classes and teach her how to not take s*** from anyone."
