Aldi’s 89p ‘Metro Rolls’ recently went viral for tasting exactly the same as Subway, so I had to get my hands on some.
I was lucky enough to grab the last pack on the shelf considering these have been flying off the shelves. The last pack available was the cheese and herb flavour, which I can only assume is a dupe of the Subway Italian herbs and cheese bread - my personal favourite!
The other Metro Roll varieties include ‘Italian Style’ and ‘7 Grain’ to help you recreate the perfect Subway fakeaway. Aldi shoppers are praising the dupe so much that they've since gone viral on TikTok, but are they really worth the hype?

The Bread
I decided to make my own version of the Subway ‘Italian B.M.T’ priced at £3.59 for a 6 inch and £5.99 for a footlong. For my Subway fakeaway, I purchased some ham, pepperoni, salami and smoked cheese, olives, lettuce and mozzarella from Aldi.
First impressions? The rolls were so soft, even a couple of days after purchasing they still felt fresh and smelt amazing. The cheese and herbs really came through but it wasn’t too overpowering.
I’d say that the roll had its differences to the Italian herbs and cheese Subway bread, but it was still delicious regardless of it being herbier than the subway version. It wasn't as big as a footlong, but it was still really thick bread which I absolutely loved.
Making the subway itself was so easy. I popped some shredded lettuce along the bottom with some peppers, then added all my meats, cheese and olives. In terms of presentation, it didn’t look as appealing as a Subway sandwich, but that was purely my fault and I will not be getting a job at Subway anytime soon.
As soon as I took a bite I was blown away by the taste. The roll seriously resembled a Subway, and although it wasn’t quite spot on, it was pretty damn close for 89p. I loved the fresh and herby flavour, and it wasn’t too cheesy which meant I could pile on plenty of cheese on my own creation.
The verdict
I totally understand why these have completely sold out. For me, they’re the closest thing I’ve ever had to a subway and it was really easy to make my own.
For those who fancy a Subway but don’t want to spend over a fiver, create your own from Aldi and use as many toppings as you like! Once again, Aldi has smashed it with the dupes, because these are a gamechanger.
I'm definitely going to purchase the other Metro Roll varieties and recreate some more Subways, but I'll need to brush up on my presentation skills first, I think.
