'I’m surprised' - Joe Gomez sent blunt Liverpool contract message and Virgil van Dijk warning

Joe Gomez’s new contract at Liverpool has “surprised” a former Premier League goalkeeper.

The Reds centre-back put pen to paper on a new deal earlier this month. Gomez’s extension means his contract will now run until 2027, after signing a new five-year deal.

Prior to his new deal, there was speculation that Gomez could leave Liverpool this summer. Aston Villa were the club who were most strongly linked with a move for the England international.

In the end, Gomez committed his long-term future to Liverpool. However, that decision has surprised former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

The former stopper has explained why he thought Gomez would have pushed for a move away from Anfield this summer.

“From his point of view, I’m surprised to see him sign,” Robinson told Football Insider . “I’m surprised he didn’t want to leave and become that main centre-half just like Van Dijk is at Liverpool.

“But on the other hand, he’s obviously been assured of game time and was happy with the role that was proposed. Within these five years there are still options to go out on loan and options to leave.

“It just gives the club that security with their asset and gives Liverpool four top-class centre-backs to lean on for this season. The situation could well change again next summer if he’s not playing as much as he wanted.

“The onus is now on him to show what he’s got now if he wants to get back into the England squad and become the partner for Van Dijk.”
