'I’m struggling' - Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville disagree on Everton Richarlison penalty call

Jamie Carragher thinks the decision not to award a penalty to Everton against Brentford was correct, although his Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville disagreed.

The Toffees could have secured their Premier League status for next season with a win over the Bees, but despite leading twice they eventually succumbed to a 3-2 loss.

Their efforts were not helped by a red card in the first half, as Jarrad Branthwaite brought down Ivan Toney when the striker was through on goal. However, there was anger at Goodison Park as Richarlison was seemingly fouled in the penalty area seconds earlier.

Despite referee Michael Oliver having a clear view of the incident and the fact that VAR took a retrospective look at the shirt pull, the on-field call stood.

After the game Frank Lampard was angry at the officiating, with Everton 1-0 up at the time and in control of the game.

Carragher and Neville analysed the moment on Monday Night Football and the former said he didn't think the shirt pull warranted a foul being awarded.

"This is in slow-motion and the stills look like how can’t he give a penalty for that decision?" said Carragher.

"That looks awful, got a lot of shirt but what I would say I don’t think it’s a penalty, we’re watching it in slow motion, the still, people are saying six of one, half a dozen of the other, it’s not, it’s Ajer. Richarlison complains at the end of it not when it’s going on.

"...We’re trying to highlight who grabbed who, how long he had his shirt… slowing it down to try and identify it makes it look (like) how isn’t it a penalty? But when you look at it in real speed, I don’t think it’s a penalty."

Neville did not agree with that assessment though and reminded Carragher of some previous comments he had made regarding shirt pulling.

"I’m struggling with the amount of time he’s pulling the shirt," said the former Manchester United right-back.

"He’s not pulling it once, he’s had a go again. There’s no way that’s being overturned if he’s given it as a penalty. No way in a million years. I can see why Everton are annoyed. You’ve always said (Carragher) know when to let go of a shirt, we’ve all grabbed shirt, you don’t pull and pull and pull, it looks to me like he’s held on too long."
