'I'm spending £20k on a new bathroom - but won't help my brother out with cash'

It is important in a family to help each other out when you can, but sometimes financial issues can cause a rift as you might not be best placed to send over some extra cash. This is the case for one man who feels he should not need to send extra money to his brother who has a 'better paid job'. The bloke is hoping to install a second bathroom in his house for his wife, but helping his brother out would hinder these plans.

His brother earns more than him and lives in a larger house but has reached out asking for help with money. Even their mum thinks he should halt the bathroom plans to help his brother.

Taking to Reddit, the man, who remained anonymous, explained that he wants to get this second bathroom installed for his wife so that she can have a quiet space to enjoy baths and not have any interruptions.

In the post, the man wrote: "I have been saving up and for my tenth anniversary I am getting a bathroom installed in the basement. I am going all out. Well, as all out as I can afford.

"I am getting a two person tub with jets, in floor heating and a heat lamp so my wife can dry off and stay warm."

The man went onto explain, however, that his brother has reached out asking for money. He says his brother has a tendency to live beyond his means, has a larger house and a very expensive truck.

He said: "My family lives in a bungalow my wife and I bought. It was built in 1956 and it is cozy for us and two kids.

"But my mom constantly compare our lifestyles. She loves showing people pictures of his Christmas decorations and stuff. And she shares his vacation pictures. That sort of thing."

He says that the budget for his bathroom is around £20,000 but even his mum is saying he should have some saved to help family out.

"She is saying he might have to sell his truck or downsize his home. I told her that's not really my problem," he explained.

"He makes a little more than I do a year so he should have savings too. She said that he needs to have a big house so he can entertain."

The man does not feel he needs to lend money to his brother which will disappoint his wife.

In response, many have agreed with the man and say he should not lend money to his brother as he can support himself.

One person wrote: "Get the second bathroom with everything you want. He can sell the truck."

While another stated: "You and your family (wife and kids) come before brother. Your family wants and needs a second bathroom. You should spend your money to improve yours and your families living situation with a second bathroom."
