I'm on the hunt for the perfect Indian takeaway so gave Sultan's Palace a go - review

After pizza, my favourite takeaway food of choice is Indian.

Indian food is, in my opinion, some of the best on the planet - especially for vegetarians. It's rich, flavoursome, indulgent, fragrant and filling.

Coming from a little Yorkshire town with a high Asian population means I've been a bit spoiled with incredible and authentic Indian takeaways. Liverpool has been my home for 13 years and while it has many things that are infinitely better than my home town, I've yet to find a takeaway that rivals my favourite hometown spot.

We've heard great things about Sultan's Palace, so decided to give it a try. The menu is extensive, with a range of chicken dishes, lamb dishes, specials, and - always a treat - an entire vegetarian and vegan section.

We opted for Paneer Butter Masala (£10.95), which is made with Tandoori style homemade cheese cooked with butter, tomatoes and cream; and Karahi Paneer (£10.95), which includes chunks of paneer, cooked in a blend of spices and herbs, with tomatoes and peppers. For our sides, we got a portion of boiled Basmati rice (£2.95) and a cheese naan (£3.95) each.

The Paneer Butter Masala was completely delicious. It was lightly spiced - I'm a bit of a wimp with spice and prefer my curries on the milder side of things, so this was quite a relief. The sauce was rich and tangy, with a perfect blend of cream and cheese. It was an exceptional curry.

I was impressed with the Paneer Butter Masala (Jess Flaherty)

The Karahi Paneer was a bit too spicy for me and the serving of peppers was a little too generous. I couldn't fully enjoy this dish as I couldn't get past the spice, but my boyfriend was a big fan of the vibrant and strong flavours. He wasn't too happy with the cheese to peppers ratio either, expecting more paneer than we received.

The cheese naans were completely heavenly. The bread was thick and doughy - perfect for dipping into the delicious curry sauces. I didn't want them to end and if my jeans weren't so ridiculously tight after overindulging in takeaways for the two years of lockdown, I'd have probably ordered several more.

Sultan's Palace is a delightfully authentic venue, with a menu that's sure to impress curry connoisseurs and novices alike. I will definitely be ordering again - it's not quite taken the top spot in my heart (that still belongs to Azeem's in my hometown) but it's pretty darn close. I'll even take my family on their next visit to Liverpool, and they consider themselves to be quite the curry experts.

Sultan's Palace is based at 75-77 Victoria Street, Liverpool, L1 6DE. For more information, click here.
