'I'm not making digs' - Trent Alexander-Arnold sets Liverpool trophy target and makes Man City claim

Trent Alexander-Arnold has challenged Liverpool to win trophies every season as Jurgen Klopp's side return to Champions League action against Inter Milan on Wednesday night.

The Reds went trophyless in 2020/21 as they failed to defend their Premier League title, falling horribly short after a defensive injury crisis decimated their squad.

However, with Klopp now boasting a fully fit squad for the first time in two years, Liverpool are still competing on all four fronts as they navigate through February ahead of next week's League Cup final against Chelsea.

And Alexander-Arnold has admitted the Reds have a hunger to win ever more trophies when defending their record so far, pointing out Liverpool have succeeded where Man City have failed when it comes to the Champions League.

"Partially, yeah. I'd say partially (we feel like we should have won more)," he told reporters. "We don’t feel disappointed we haven’t won enough trophies because we feel the ones we have won are the biggest and the best that you can get your hands on.

"Not making any digs but you look at Man City’s amazing team, they haven’t been able to win the Champions League. They've won a couple of Prems but they haven't been able to win a Champions League.

"We have won both over the last few years so it just shows that we are able to do it in both competitions.

"But I think there is an expectation now as a team, as players, to win trophies. One trophy, minimum, a season is what we need to be achieving. Next week we have the opportunity to go and grab that.

"With the squad we've got, with the team, the players, the manager, we should be winning trophies, we expect that of ourselves and if we don’t it is a massive disappointment. It's expected now.

"We are not in that phase now where we are happy just to get to finals and it is a little bit of a surprise and it's a day out. There is an expectation there now to build on and be doing it every season."

And while Liverpool trail Man City by nine points, boasting a game in hand, Alexander-Arnold hasn't given up hope of the Reds being able to topple the reigning champions at the top of the table as he looks to add to his trophy haul.

"It is important for us to make sure we keep winning games," the England international said. "I don’t think nine points gap is much pressure but we need to keep as much pressure on as we can, make sure we win that game in hand and take it to six.

"It's not in our hands at the minute. All we can do is win our games and see what happens but anything can happen in this league so it's important we are in a position to pounce if they do slip up at some point.

"Definitely on all four fronts, it makes it easier having so many great players in the team but the seasons when we won the Champions League and almost won the league, we have shown ourselves and shown people that we can compete on multiple fronts.

"But to have a place in all four competitions at this point of the season is good for us. We have a chance in a couple of weeks to add silverware early doors. That's what our focus is on, making sure we are still in all four competitions for as long as we can go.
