"I'm not bothered" - What the young people of Manchester have to say about the King's Coronation

On Saturday the nation will come together to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III with street parties and events galore.

Despite the Coronation being a momentous moment in the country's history, a recent YouGov poll revealed that interest in the event itself might not be that high.

In a poll that surveyed 3070 adults, 35% answered ‘not very much’ when asked if they cared about the forthcoming coronation. 29% of the adults said they didn’t care at all, 24% said they cared a fair amount and only 9% said they cared a great deal.

So the Manchester Evening News headed to Manchester city centre to ask the youth just how much they cared about the Coronation, if they will be tuning in and what can be done to change the apathetic view of the monarchy among the younger generation?

For 18-year-old student from Manchester, Love, her A levels were much more important than anything that taking place at Buckingham Palace on Saturday. Speaking to the MEN she said :“I don’t think it does anything for me. The Royal Family has always been there so it’s just another person stepping up.

"It’s not like anything is going to change except for the faces on the money. I’m applying for A levels so that’s more important for me, I’m not really involved.

When asked if there was anything that would make her care about the Royal Family she simply replied: “Nothing.”

For 23-year-old Logan, news of the Coronation came as a surprise, however, he echoed Love’s sentiments about his lack of care while also pointing to the British Empire's history as the reason why he does not support the monarchy full heartedly. “I didn’t know it was happening until you just said it to be honest, I didn’t know the Coronation was happening this weekend." He exclaimed.

“I don’t really pay much attention to that stuff, I don’t think it concerns me. I’ve not looked into it a lot but I know there’s a bloody history with the monarchy but also it’s just like rich people stuff and it’s away from what I’m doing.

Callum, 20, from Salford said: "I'm not overly bothered about it to be perfectly honest. It’s interesting to live through a Coronation but apart from that I’m not bothered.

“I’ve not even heard about anyone around me having a party, if I was invited I’d say yes though.”

Some young people on the streets of Manchester did care and were in fact very much looking forward to the big day. 19-year-old Lina who is originally from Sudan saw the Coronation as a chance for her to witness first hand what takes place during crowning of a monarch.

She told the MEN “I’m a really excited, I can’t wait until Saturday actually.

“I’ve only been here for nearly six years so I’ve never really experienced that whole event and what the country actually does when something like that happen. I’m excited to see how the whole process will go, what will actually happen, how does it actually work. Just little details.”

21-year-old boxing coach and law student from Bolton, Sannah said she saw the Coronation as a ‘moment in history’ with the prospect of a new king and the bank holiday as a perk.

“I feel really excited, I think it’s something that we should all be looking forward too.” She told the MEN.

“I’m looking forward to the fact that everybody gets a day off, not had a king in a while so that should be good and it’s a moment in history that we can all witness.”

Despite her lack of knowledge about the royals, 26-year-old Hannah said she was ultimately excited about the Coronation and once again and an extra day off work. “I’m excited, I don’t really know much about it. I know you get a bank holiday and that’s about it.” She said.

“My mum says it’s history, 'watch it' so I'm gonna watch it for that sake.

"I’ve been invited to a street party, but I don’t know if I’m going to go. I might watch a bit on telly but then I don’t know, just enjoy my day off.

“I think a lot of people would say that it’s quite rude and not very good that I’m not that interested but it’s not really my sort of thing."
