I’m Kinda Obsessed With Nightbitch – The Film Where Amy Adams Turns Into A Dog (No, Actually)

Nightbitch Amy Adams dog

Amy Adamsnew movie Nightbitch just released its first trailer, and it’s everything. With writer-director Marielle Heller at the helm, it’s a horror-comedy about Adams’ character — an overwhelmed stay-at-home mum — who starts turning into a dog.

“I’m never going to be smart, happy or thin ever again. Oh, and I’m pretty sure I’m turning into a dog,” she declares to her group of mum-friends.

Adams’ character is actually just named ‘Mother’, so while she used to be an artist, being a mum is now her entire identity. Until she turns into a dog, I guess.

Everything I loved about Amy Adams’ new movie Nightbitch from the trailer

As someone who is child-free by choice, the trailer has just reaffirmed everything I believe in, but I sincerely think that it could make you think twice about bringing children into the world.

After multiple instances of cleaning up shit, finding her kid drinking from the toilet and a wet rag of a husband who spouts nonsense like, “I would kill to stay home with [our son] every day” and “happiness is a choice”, she snaps.

And look, the movie seems like it’s actually committing to the bit. Her canine transformation begins when her son notices she’s growing dog fur, her canines become sharp and her eyes start to change.

At one point in the trailer, she eats dog food and lets out a woof, before we see her true form as a wolf.

The best moment of the trailer? At a dinner party, Adams’ character suddenly stands up with a fierce look in her eyes and utters a line you’d never expect.

“I could crush a walnut with my vagina,” she growls, before shoving a burger down her gob. Peak cinema.

Who is in the cast of Nightbitch?

The film also stars Scoot McNairy, Zoë Chao, Jessica Harper and Mary Holland, and it’s based on Rachel Yoder’s novel of the same name from 2021.

What is Nightbitch actually about?

The movie’s official logline reads: “A woman, thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a dog.”

Nightbitch has a bunch of feminist themes, and director Heller told Vanity Fair it’s a “comedy for women, and a horror movie for men”.

“Sometimes, when people ask me what the movie is about, I’m like, ‘It’s about motherhood and rage’. And you either get that or you don’t,” she added.

When will Nightbitch be released in Australia?

Nightbitch will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2024. It’s scheduled to hit cinemas in the US on December 6, 2024, with the Australian release date yet to be confirmed.

I’m actually obsessed with everything about this trailer, and I can’t wait to watch this horror-comedy when it comes out.
