'I'm going to chop you up': Man allegedly attacks housemate with axe

A man allegedly attacked his housemate with an axe, yelling "I'm going to f---ing kill you" and chasing him out of their home.

Sione Fakalelei Valuvalu Manu, 36, allegedly grabbed his housemate by the neck, putting the other man in a chokehold, before swinging an axe at him.

Manu did not enter pleas to intentionally threatening to kill another person, common assault, and possessing an offensive weapon in the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Magistrate Ian Temby denied his application for bail, citing concerns that Manu's alleged outburst "was no idle threat".

"The violence is so extreme, and the apparent attempt to carry out the threat to kill so serious," he said.

"Given the intent shown by the defendant, I am highly concerned that he will try again."

According to police documents, the alleged victim was on the phone on Wednesday morning when Manu started yelling at him, shouting "f--cking get out of the house" and "I'm going to kill you".

Manu allegedly then grabbed his housemate by the neck and held him in a chokehold.

Police claim when the housemate fought back, Manu grabbed an axe and swung it at him saying "I'm going to chop you up".

The alleged victim told police he had to use a board to protect himself from the axe blow, before fleeing the home in fear of his life.

The housemate hid in the neighbours' carport while Manu allegedly followed him outside, carrying the axe. Police then arrived, after receiving a call from a neighbour.

Manu was arrested at a nearby property holding an axe with a yellow handle, which was seized by police.

Legal Aid lawyer Alana Clarke argued Manu was not a risk to the community, given he knew the alleged victim and he had no criminal history.

"[There's] nothing to suggest a propensity to violence," she said.

However, while prosecutor Louis Loizou acknowledged the incident hadn't been a "random attack", he argued Manu posed an unacceptable risk to the safety and welfare of the alleged victim.

"There are very serious allegations," he said.

Manu was told of the magistrate's decision through a translator. He is set to face court again next month.
