'I'm getting revenge on my awful colleague with an insulting Secret Santa gift'

With Christmas fast approaching, many workplaces will be starting to organise their Christmas parties and getting their employees in the holiday spirit with fun festive events like Secret Santa, where everyone pulls a name out of a hat and is then tasked with buying a present for the person they picked.

But one woman has found herself in a tricky situation after she ended up pulling the name of her least favourite co-worker - the "office stirrer" who always tries to cause trouble.

The woman said she's keen on getting "revenge" on her colleague with her Secret Santa gift and wants to find the most "insulting" present she can, but has insisted it must be "subtle", and must cost less than the £10 limit.

In a post on Mumsnet, she said: "I'm looking for the worst, most subtle insulting Secret Santa gift for the office stirrer. Limit is £10 and we're opening them in person."

The woman, who titled her post "Revenge Secret Santa for the office b***h", then said she was thinking of buying her co-worker some secondhand socks, before asking for gift ideas from other Mumsnet users.

She added: "I'm torn between a pair of secondhand socks or a homemade loo roll cosy! What are the worst [presents] you've had? Can I cast insult [on her] without being too overt?"

Commenters on the post were split, as while some were eager to share their less-than-ideal present ideas, others said it would be a "low blow" on the woman's part to "publicly humiliate" her colleague, no matter how much she dislikes her.

One person suggested: "Some out-of-date biscuits worth £2."

While another added: "A box of second-hand chocs with one missing."

And a third said: "A Baylis & Harding gift set. Utterly inoffensive, utterly impersonal and utterly blah. Job done."

But someone who disagreed with the idea then pointed out: "Please don't. I know of someone who was given a 'funny' insulting gift and it was devastating to them. It caused lots of upset and I hope the gift giver feels shame to this day.

"Public humiliation wrapped up in a Christmas gift (however token) is a low blow."

There were many others who also said the concept of a revenge gift was a bad idea, with one even telling the woman to "grow up and handle the situation like an adult".

Another wrote: "Publicly humiliating someone on that kind of scale will make you look bad. It will become the stuff of gossip. Get some chocolate and be done."
