'I'm a flight attendant and love the perks of my job - not just travelling'

An Emirates worker from Ireland moved to Dubai three years ago and is now a huge advocate for the Gulf state.

Cailin Tobin, from Cobh near Cork, swapped Ireland for the Middle East after taking a job with Emirates Airlines.

As well as loving the city itself, she loves the lifestyle it affords her, RSVP Live reports.

Whether its taking weekend breaks in the Seychelles or Maldives, paying no tax or living in an apartment pay for by the company, Cailin is living her version of the Dubai dream.

The flight attendant - who chronicles her life aboard on TikTok and Instagram - says Irish women like her tend to do really well with Emirates.

Here she explains why she loves her job and the city.

She told the publication: "Joining Emirates as a member of cabin crew member was the reason I decided to head east for a new adventure that has also allowed me to visit other incredible destinations, both as part of my job and, during downtime.

"My fellow crew members and I are incredibly lucky; from Dubai, we can take long weekends in the Seychelles or Maldives, which is just over four hours away.

"Sure, it would take me longer to drive from Dublin to Donegal for the Bank Holiday!"

It's not just travelling around the world that makes the career choice so appealing.

She added: "I benefit from a tax-free salary and Emirates provides me with a fantastic apartment, which I share with my lovely colleagues from Poland and UK.

"Emirates also arranges our transport to and from work and as an employee of the airline, we receive exclusive discounts for shopping and leisure attractions across the city.

"While it sounds like a cliché, it really is my dream job and I know that Emirates is looking to recruit more crew from Ireland; for some reason, the Irish seem to do really well in Dubai and we love it!

Cailin's Dubai travel tips

"For me, while there is no place quite like home, Dubai is spectacular, and everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime," said Cailin. "There is an abundance of things to see, to do, to experience and quite honestly, a walk through the old streets of Dubai is an explosion of the senses. Every day is a new dawning and a new experience and right now, there is nowhere else I’d rather live."

So, what are some of her go-to spots in the city?

Bur Dubai and Deira

"Separated by the Dubai Creek, Bur Dubai and Deira were once the commercial epicentre of Dubai. This is a part of Dubai that often gets overlooked, but this is where you will find Dubai’s past right in the present – it is packed with culture and tradition and will give you a whole new perspective on the city.

"Deira is buzzing with activity and is home to the famous gold and spice souks (markets) that line the streets and where bartering is a national sport.

"You can take an Abra (traditional Arabian boat taxi) across the Creek from Deira to Bur Dubai and back again for as little as €1."

The best food

Describing the restaurant scene as "really buzzing", some of her highlights include the Atmosphere restaurant on the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa for "spectacular" views, or heading to old Dubai for some traditional Arabic mezze.

She also recommends the Dubai Food Festival, usually in February.

Her top tip? "When it comes to dining, formal or casual, Dubai does not disappoint and until September 30th, all Emirates customers arriving in or stopping in Dubai can avail of discounts in hundreds of bars, restaurants and cafés simply by presenting their Emirates boarding pass.

"The My Emirates Summer Pass is also valid at many retail, leisure and spa outlets and a group of friends who visited me last month availed of discounts of up to 20% at some greats restaurants and one of the best spas in the city."

Best things to see and do

An excursion into the desert is top of the cards.

"There is some serious craic to be found in dune bashing across the sandy hills in a 4X4 or even sandboarding down the steep sandy banks that decorate the sparse terrain," she says. "For those wishing for an experience like no other, you can even take a hot air balloon ride and witness the stunning desert landscape from above."

Camel rides and watching a falcon show are also some of the experiences she says you won't want to miss, while foodies should keep an eye out for tours that include an Arabian BBQ at sunset with mouthwatering dishes such as spiced couscous, roast lamb, grilled chicken, chickpea salads and flatbreads.
