Whether you opt for an updated oversized cut - one of the key spring/summer fashion trends 2025 - choose a classic knee length style, or you’re wondering how to pick a Burberry trench that flatters you, there’s a trench coat out there for everyone – and my latest find might just be my favourite yet!
From one of the best British clothing brands, Jaeger, this update on the classic trench coat is a must-own – Claudia Winkleman called it her ‘detective’ trench and it’s definitely got a hint of Columbo about it, in the best way.

With a classic double-breasted design and tie waist belt, this trench coat from Jaeger is a smart addition to every wardrobe and will work with a variety of outfits, from midi dresses to your most comfortable jeans.
JAEGER PURE COTTON BELTED TRENCH COAT: FABRIC
While trench coats are typically made of lightweight showerproof cotton, Jaeger’s take comes in a mid-weight double cloth fabric, giving it a weightier, luxurious feel. With a practical water-repellent finish and bound seams, this coat will keep you dry in sudden showers and feels cosier than others in my collection.
As it’s made exclusively of cotton, the coat will also stop you from overheating on warmer, sticky days, making it a great addition to your spring capsule wardrobe too.
JAEGER PURE COTTON BELTED TRENCH COAT: FIT
As someone who grazes 5’3” on a good day, I often find that trench coats can finish at an odd point on my body, but this longline style has ever-so-slightly insouciant oversized fi,t which I love.
While I usually range in size between a UK 10 and 12, for this coat, I found that I needed to size down to a UK 10. The body of the coat gently flares, creating a flattering silhouette that gives a nod to the oversized styles seen on the catwalks of Chloe, Gucci and Carven for SS25, but the fitted shoulders mean that I don’t look swamped in excess fabric.
Whether you wear it open or cinched at the waist, the longer length also means that it’s perfect to style with a midi-dress - something that’s good to consider when you’re wondering how to style your trench coat.
JAEGER PURE COTTON BELTED TRENCH COAT: STYLE

As a blonde, the colour of my trench coat can make a huge difference to my complexion - I often struggle with the classic beige hue of many trench coats. If they’re too pale, the colour washes me out, but the timeless camel shade of this trench coat adds soft warmth to my skin even on the greyest of days as well as standing out in a sea of stone-coloured cotton.
The design is full of thoughtful and stylish detailing – the inside of the trench is lined with a cream cotton, adding another layer of fabric to keep you warm, and when you flip the collar of the coat, it reveals a contrasting panel in a matching colour to the lining.
The coat is finished with large branded buttons in a deep brown and has a buckle-less tie belt in a matching fabric. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of options when it comes to how to tie a trench coat, even without a buckle!
JAEGER PURE COTTON BELTED TRENCH COAT: WARMTH
One concern that many people have when it comes to trench coats is just how warm they are. By nature, a light or mid-weight coat, they are definitely better suited to the transitional periods of spring and autumn, but this Jaeger trench coat is made of a slightly heavier cotton, making it warmer than many of my other trench coats, which feel flimsy by comparison.
While I wouldn’t go out in the snow wearing it, this style definitely feels warmer and with enough space in the roomy sleeves, you could easily fit one of your best cashmere jumpers underneath on chillier days.
JAEGER PURE COTTON BELTED TRENCH COAT: CLEANING AND CARE
While this trench coat is made of 100% cotton, the instructions recommend a gentle professional dry clean and indicate that you shouldn’t machine wash it. By leaving it to the professionals, you’ll be ensuring that the showerproof finish stays in tact and the crisp, weighty cotton is maintained for a smart look and luxurious feel.
For any small stains, simply spot wash gently with a damp cloth and when you're not wearing it, hang your Jaeger trench coat on a padded hanger to maintain the shoulder shape.
JAEGER PURE COTTON BELTED TRENCH COAT: VERDICT
I can see why this coat got the seal of approval from Claudia Winkleman – from the second I slipped my arms into it, I feel like I’m wearing a trench coat with a price tag far higher than £199.
With its flattering cut and colour, my other trench coats have already found themselves being pushed to the back of the wardrobe in favour of this classic camel version.
