I'm a fashion editor with a vast collection of trainers - these Russell & Bromley flatforms are my new favourite

Three images of Caroline Parr wearing trainers .

As an avid fan of trainers, I've tried a LOT of different options over the years. From Superga's affordable canvas plimsolls to the adidas Sambas that were trending last year, it's safe to say I know my stuff when it comes to everyday footwear.

I've worn and loved several pairs of Russell & Bromley trainers over the years, and whilst with a lot of other brands you have to wear them in a few times before they're comfortable, that's never been the case with R&B. I realised long ago that you're investing in comfort with this legendary British brand.

So I knew before I even tried the Park Mid Flatform Mid Laceless Sneaker that comfort was pretty much a given. But I'm less of an aficionado when it comes to flatform trainers, and have never tried a laceless pair.

Specifications

Price: RRP £195

Size range: UK 3-9 (no half sizes)

Fastening: Laceless

Upper/sole material: Grained white leather, leather lining, lightweight flatform rubber sole

These come up time and time again when considering the best white trainers. They're a lower version of the Park Up platform trainers you've probably seen Trinny Woodall wearing, and I love the grained leather finish and flash of silver on the heels. But are they worth £195?

I tested them with lots of different outfits and for various outings to take the guesswork out of your decision on whether to 'add to basket'. Here's my hot take...

Russell & Bromley Park Mid: Comfort & support

My first impressions of these trainers was just how lightweight they are. The 4cm platform (or "flatform") really does pack a punch - it gives you a little lift but is just as flexible as a regular trainer sole.

The cushioning around the ankles does exactly what it says on the tin. It not only prevents blisters or rubbing - it actively supports your ankle. Absolutely no 'breaking in' time with these beauties.

I tested them on various terrains too. Whilst these are sleek enough to be a smart white office or occasion trainer, I wanted to know they are practical too. I took them for a spin on dog walks and for running errands, travelling across grass, concrete and at home on a wooden floor.

A pain point I often find with trainers is that the tongue comes up too high, and rubs the front of my ankle. The little elasticated panel (scroll down for a close-up) moves with you as you walk, so there's no chance of an issue. The tongue is padded too.

The only thing I would say is I saw Trinny say she wears these with no socks. I found I did need a trusty trainer sock as I thought some of the seams inside might cause a bit of friction. Personally I much prefer wearing trainers with socks anyway, but that might just be me!

Aside from how thoroughly practical it is, I really like the sleek look of the laceless design. I always find laces a bit of a faff with trainers - do you hide them down the sides? Do you tie them at all? You can slip these on and go, even when wearing socks.

The Russell & Bromley branding on the front and the edge of the flatform sole at the back is a really subtle but stylish touch. The flash of silver adds to the luxury feel too.

The other argument for spending that bit more than you normally might on trainers, is that these are going to work with everything in your wardrobe. I tried to show you a few different examples, but I've worn mine with dresses, jeans, skirts and tailored trousers. In the photos I'm wearing this Rixo leopard skirt, then Sienna Miller for M&S barrel leg jeans and a pair of grey trousers from M&S.

These aren't the kind of trainers you can just chuck in the washing machine, but so far I've found the leather to be really durable. They still look just as good as the day they arrived. I do hate it when trainers quickly look creased and worn. I'm after that box fresh look, always!

We've got loads of tips on how to clean white shoes, but so far any marks I've got on mine have wiped right off with a damp cloth. I'll report back if I encounter any major issues.

Russell & Bromley Park Mid: Verdict

I can see why these trainers are hugely popular. The attention to detail is masterful, and well worth splashing the cash. Especially when you consider the cost per wear.

When I got these I probably had five or six different pairs of trainers on rotation in my wardrobe, but now I find myself choosing these above all others, time and time again.

FAQs

Is Russell & Bromley a luxury brand shoe?

Russell & Bromley is a hugely-respected luxury British brand, that has been delivering quality goods since 1880. They offer both men's and women's shoes, as well as handbags.

It's still a family-run company, and they recently appointed their first-ever Creative Director, Daniel Beardsworth-Shaw.

Celebrity fans include the Princess of Wales and style guru Trinny Woodall, and prices range from around £145 up to £345 for women's shoes.

Do Russell & Bromley do repairs?

According to the website, they "offer a repair service on many of our shoes and handbags, provided they have not been to another repairer."

They also offer free returns online and in-store.

Do Russell & Bromley ever have sales?

There are two sales per year - one in spring, and one in winter. I've bought plenty of sale styles over the years but since the Park Mid are a bestseller, it's a risk to wait to see if they go into the sale.
