I'm A Celebrity...South Africa: Amir Khan's sporting controversy, his near-death gunpoint experience and model wife

Although he is an Olympic silver medallist and successful boxer many remember Amir Khan for his time on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! and particularly strawberry-gate. Now Amir is heading back to our TV screens as he joins the all-star cast for I'm A Celebrity...South Africa.

I'm A Celebrity...South Africa is an all-star version of the series and will see former contestants who took on the Australian jungle in I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! head to South Africa in an attempt to win and be crowned the first I'm A Celebrity Legend. You can read all about the show here.

Amir first appeared on the series in 2017 and at the time was the highest-paid contestant in the show's history. He was the seventh celebrity to be eliminated, finishing fifth, lasting 20 days in the jungle.

He donated some of his earnings from the show to the children's charity Barnado's which he is an ambassador for. At the time, the boxer won strawberries in the Dingo Dollar challenge but instead of sharing them with the rest of the camp he and fellow celebrity Ian Lee ate them by themselves causing uproar in camp.

Sporting controversy

Amir was issued a two-year ban from boxing for doping after he retired in 2022. An anti-doping test revealed the presence of a banned substance following his fight against Kell Brook in February 2022.

A tribunal agreed the doping was unintentional. Speaking to Sky Sports, Amir said: "I've never cheated...but I've got a two-year ban now, which is quite strange and funny because I'm already retired anyway. There's no comeback planned at all. But I've never cheated and I never will. That's just not something I would do."

Near-death gunpoint experience

In 2022 Amir went through a near-death experience when he was robbed at gunpoint. He and his wife, Faryal Makhdoom, were targeted when they left the Sahara Grill restaurant in east London.

The 36-year-old was forced to hand over the bespoke, rose gold, diamond-encrusted Franck Muller timepiece - reportedly worth £72,000. Speaking to The Sun on Sunday Amir feared he would lose his life during the attack.

He said: "In that moment, you think the worst... that the kids could be growing up without their dad, that Faryal would be raising them on her own. Your life flashes before your eyes. I leaned my head to the right because I thought, if he is going to shoot me, he can shoot the side of my head. I don't want to see the bullet coming."

Model wife

Amir is married to model and TV personality Faryal Makhdoom and they married in 2013 when Faryal was 21. They have three children together, Lamaisah, Alayna and Muhammad Zaviyar. You can keep up to date with the latest TV and showbiz news by signing up to the newsletter here.

There have been many cheating rumours surrounding the marriage, including when Faryal gave birth to their second child, Alayna. Four years after their marriage, in 2017, the pair briefly split after both accusing each other of cheating. However, the family and Amir and Faryal reconciled.

I'm A Celebrity...South Africa begins on ITV1 on Monday, April 24 at 9pm.
