I'm A Celebrity's Sue Cleaver's weight loss down to popular diet with 'no strict rules'

Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has been impressing fans on I'm A Celebrity as she tackles the challenges that the jungle has to offer.

And throughout her time on the soap, on which she plays grumpy Eileen Grimshaw, she's also been wowing viewers after dropping an impressive three stone and four dress sizes thanks to a popular diet with "no strict rules".

The 59-year-old took on a couple of lifestyle changes after she collapsed on the Corrie set in 2011 due to a type 2 diabetes attack. Many people believe her condition is why she's been exempt from a couple of jungle trials, Wales Online reports.

She's thanked the Mediterranean diet for her weight loss, which focuses on ditching high-sugar foods in favour of more whole foods and healthy fats.

This style of diet is one recommended by Diabetes UK as the charity states on its website: "It could help reduce the risk of certain diabetes complications."

It adds: "There’s also evidence to show that the Mediterranean-style diet can promote weight loss and improve blood glucose management in people with type 2 diabetes."

While following this diet, it's recommended you eat plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, beans, nuts, grains and fish, as well as healthy fats such as avocado and olive oil.

There are no strict rules when it comes to following this particular diet, but those who follow it are encouraged to limit their intake of certain foods and ingredients such as added sugar and processed meat, which in turn helps to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Speaking of her drastic weight loss to Woman Magazine some years ago, a close source to the "self-confessed foodie" said: "She hasn't been this size since she was in her 30s. She's always been a self-confessed foodie, who admitted that over-indulgence was her Achilles Heel. Now, everything has changed."

They added: "Sue's in her mid 50s so it was a no-brainer that cutting down on certain things was what she had to do. She's in this for the long game and wants to live a long, happy and healthy life."

As well as drastically cutting down on sugar, it was revealed that Sue also ditched gluten from her diet.

As reported by RSVP Live, an insider said that everything she ate now was low GI (glycemic) and gluten-free. These lifestyle changes apparently weren't just for her though - she took them on for the sake of her family, in order to live a healthy and happy life.
