Matt Hancock has been voted as camp leader on I'm a Celebrity, with journalist Charlene White as his deputy. The former health secretary, who did his fifth trial in a row on Sunday, November 13, was pitted against former rugby player and royal, Mike Tindall, but unbelievably won the title. Tindall and his chosen deputy, Sue Cleaver were not impressed to lose, with the ex-rugby union international saying he was "devastated" to lose out to the serving MP.
After a challenge that saw the two camp members go head-to-head and Matt and Charlene brand themselves the underdogs, but ultimately win, Coronation Street star Sue yelled: “Oh, b*******! Furious.”
Matt said: “Obviously, it’s a great honour and privilege to be camp leader. I want to thank everybody who voted for me.” Charlene said: “Does this win feel sweet, especially after you lost to Boris? Do you feel like you have been vindicated?” Matt replied: “This more than makes up for it.”
Charlene said: “I’m super, super proud of Matt for winning one leadership contest.” But the other team weren't really impressed by how things turned out. Mike added: “I'm not disappointed because I'm a sportman, I'm disappointed because I lost to Matt Hancock.” Earlier, Mike, who is married to Princess Anne's daughter Zara, had also said: : “If I went home and I’d lost to Matt Hancock, I’d be in so much s***.”
And as the four returned to camp the remaining celebrities quizzed Matt and Charlene whether the rules the camp leaders were just guidance or actual rules, referencing Matt's earlier defence of him kissing another man's wife while people weren't allowed to mix with other households during the coronavirus pandemic. Sue then revealed to Boy George that she and Mike were already "plotting a revolution".
Earlier in the episode the leadership drama unfolded as Chris Moyles revealed to the camp that the public had been voting for two members to go head-to-head to be camp leader and that Matt and Mike must compete in a challenge, and pick deputies. Matt picked Charlene and Mike picked actress Sue Cleaver.
Matt and Charlene and Mike and Sue arrived at the challenge area and read the instructions which said: “In front of each team is a wall of lights. You will only see which lights are switched on when you press the red button. The first team to turn on all their lights will become the leader and deputy of camp. Mike and Matt, you will be responsible for turning the lights on. However, you will be blindfolded and will have to rely on your chosen deputy to give you instructions from the deputies’ chairs.”
Matt told Charlene that he thought they were the underdogs and Charlene scolded him adding: “No, no, no you do not come into this challenge with that attitude young man!”
Charlene quipped: “Did you go into the leadership challenge thinking you were the underdog.” Matt replied: “Yeah…”
Charlene laughed: “Well then that’s why you lost.” As they took on the challenge, Charlene inadvertently misunderstood and was directing Matt to turn the lights off. She then got her left and right muddled up sending him into the bushes.
Charlene admitted: “I got in a muddle between my left and my right!” Matt laughed: “She kept sending him into the bushes!” But he added: “My speed felt like it got quicker, because I trusted you.”
The MP also got stung by a scorpion earlier in the day but recovered to face his fifth trial in a row, the House of Horrors.
