I'm A Celeb's Edwina Currie rushed to hospital after being knocked over by runaway dog

Reality TV star Edwina Currie spent ten days in hospital thanks to a freak accident involving a runaway dog.

The former politician, 76, says she was left with a 'totally mashed' hip which needed a replacement operation after a German shepherd lunged at her while she was out walking her own dog.

She recalls being 'numb with pain' and having to be admitted as an emergency to Macclesfield hospital following the incident near her home in Derbyshire.

Edwina - who famously had an affair with Sir John Major - is now considering suing following what she calls the 'most terrifying experience' of her life.

Discussing the ordeal, the I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! star claims the dog who 'lunged' at her had already attacked over pets in the area prior to their encounter with one another.

"I was walking my dog when it came bounding over not on a lead and sent me flying," Edwina recalls.

"Its owner just grabbed it and went off. He never asked how I was. I was on the floor in absolute agony, but he showed no remorse."

She continues to tell The Sun how it was the most terrifying experience of her life and recalls trying to get over the fall.

But after 12 days of 'hobbling around', Edwina was admitted to hospital - where she was told her joint had disintegrated before going on to be given a replacement within hours.

Discussing the dog who she claims attacked her, Edwina describes the German shepherd as 'unmanageable' and says the animal has been in and out of rescue centres.

"It’s a nightmare. It’s caused other problems in the area. It is owned by a couple and has pulled its female before and she was left with a banged head," the star says.

"I contacted Derbyshire police and now it has to be on a lead with a muzzle when outside."

The star adds how she is considering taking legal action to recoup some of the £5,000 she says she's spent on private physiotherapy sessions and care for her own dogs.

During her time in politics, Edwina served as Conservative Party Member of Parliament for South Derbyshire from 1983 until 1997. She was a Junior Health Minister for two years, resigning in 1988 during the salmonella-in-eggs controversy.

Over recent years, the former politician has become a regular fixture on reality TV - with stints on shows like I'm A Celebrity, Strictly Come Dancing and Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen.

As fellow politician Matt Hancock landed a place in the final of this year's series of I'm A Celebrity last month, Edwina caused uproar as she defended the former health secretary.

"I think he’s been engaging, friendly and helpful and yeah, I can see why they’ve been voting for him," the star said of the disgraced MP ahead of Jill Scott being crowned Queen of the Jungle.
