'I love living in Milton Keynes - it's more than just roads and roundabouts'

Several former towns around the UK are whipping out the bunting today after finally being granted city status ahead of The Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Residents of the new cities are making the most of their platform to shout about why they live in the best place in the UK - and they make some compelling arguments.

While Wrexham locals can boast their football club is owned by two Hollywood stars (Rob McElhenny and Ryan Reynolds), Doncaster dwellers can say they get to walk past the stunning Doncaster Minster Cathedral every day.

But one of the newest cities is a place that is often overlooked by the rest of the country - and sometimes, it's just the butt of mean jokes.

The modern metropolis of Milton Keynes is home to around 270,000 people, most of whom are thrilled that their home is now recognised as a city.

The birthplace of sports stars such as Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford and footballer Dele Alli, the city has a heavy focus on activity - offering everything from skiing to water sports.

Sophia Murray, a 31-year-old who works in PR, spoke to The Mirror about why her hometown deserves its recognition - and why it's a lot more than just big roads and roundabouts.

Growing up in Berkhamsted before later moving to London, Sophia settled in Milton Keynes last November to become a homeowner.

"I do work in London but it wasn't ever an option to buy there as a single person," she said.

"I didn't want to live in a small town or a village, and to me Milton Keynes has a nice blend of city-type amenities and country living."

She described the huge centre:mk shopping mall, which has just about every store you can think of, as well as plenty of green space.

"I live 10 minutes away from a lake, five minutes away from a park and about a minute from the canal," she said.

Sophia added the stereotype that Milton Keynes is just "fast roads" couldn't be more wrong, and has been specifically designed so residents have a very different experience of the city.

"There was a lot of thinking that went into the design. If you're travelling through, then of course all you see is the roads.

"But the living quarters are underneath all that, so when you're walking around, you're not seeing or hearing the fast cars."

Sophia says Milton Keynes is a lovely place to take a stroll in, because there is so much to see.

"I love the lakes. They have boats and water sports and it's just so nice. You kind of feel like you're on holiday.

"There's a new restaurant that has opened up that has a lovely view over the lake and a new hotel in the same spot," she said.

Overall, she's thrilled with Milton Keynes's new city status and, while there are some naysayers in the area who worry it won't change anything, she reckons it will put her home on the map.

With the MK:U Technology University set to open in Milton Keynes in the next few years (the opening has been delayed), and more and more fintech companies setting up in the city, Sophia says there's chatter of the place becoming a mini Silicon Valley in the next decade.

For the young professional, one of the best things about her home city is its location - meaning she can commute into London whenever she needs to in just under an hour.

She's also not far from Birmingham, meaning she's incredibly well connected.

While lots of people use Milton Keynes as a base to commute into bigger cities, she's noticing more and more people coming into the new city itself for work - another sign that the area is up-and-coming.

While many sneer at the idea of visiting the city for the weekend, Sophia says there's plenty to see on a trip to her hometown.

She said: "It depends on what you like to do but there's so much. We have the ski slope, a theatre, a jazz music venu, a sports stadium.

"There's also plenty of shopping and The National Museum of Computing, as well as all the green space. Woburn Safari Park is beautiful."
