‘I hope I can return’ - Amad reveals his Manchester United dream for next season

Manchester United youngster Amad says he hopes to play a part in Erik ten Hag’s plans next season, outlining how he wishes to become a first-team regular at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful spell on loan at Sunderland this season, netting 11 times in 34 games having become a regular starter for Tony Mowbray. Amad scored twice in the 4-4 draw with Hull on Friday with the Black Cats outside shots for a Championship play-off place.

Amad joined United in 2021 from Atalanta for an initial £19m which could rise to £37m. Two months after arriving in Manchester, the attacker scored in 1-1 Europa League knockout game against AC Milan during one of nine first-team appearances.

Following a poor loan spell with Rangers, Amad returned to United to feature several times for Erik ten Hag in pre-season before another loan spell away was agreed. The Ivorian has blossomed at the Stadium of Light, becoming a fan-favourite and impressing boss Mowbray so much that he implored United not to recall the striker in January.

Amad still has one eye on the long-term though and he detailed his ambition upon his United return. Speaking to FourFourTwo, he said: “I haven’t shown my best for them [United] yet, but I hope next season I can return and prove my talent. My dream is to play regular football at Manchester United."

Amad's last competitive senior appearance for United came in May 2021, when he started in a final day 2-1 win over Wolves. Two weeks earlier, he had bagged his maiden first-team assist against Leicester during a 2-1 defeat.

As well as his 11 goals, Amad has recorded three assists for Sunderland. His loan spell is due to expire at the end of the season.
