I have changed my mind about Trent Alexander-Arnold's next step at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has missed four of his last nine penalties now for Liverpool, and failed to score an important one for Egypt too when they missed out on the World Cup.

I was saying to some of the ex-players that I expected him to miss it, I really did. I could see it and I could sense it. He tried to place it too much in the corner and his confidence isn’t what it was.

I’ve been there with penalties. I had that one saved at Wembley (in the 1988 FA Cup final). I didn’t want a penalty. After that, we won one against Manchester United, 0-0 it was, and I told Jan Molby to take it because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind.

He scored and we won 1-0. I know what it’s like when you’re not in the right frame of mind. Mo Salah is not in the right frame of mind to take penalties at this moment in time. I think he should pass them over to someone else, just until next season when he can take over again.

I’ve been there and it’ll be on his mind. Having said that, I don’t think there’s going to be another game where it’s going to be crucial because we’re out of the top four hunt now. We’re maybe playing for Europa League at best unfortunately. That’s where we are at the moment.

If there are big penalties coming, I think Mo should pass the buck. But having said that, where we are at the moment, I don’t think we’re going to be playing for any high stakes.

I've changed my mind about Trent Alexander-Arnold

I think Trent looked great in that inverted full-back role, I thought he looked really good in there when stepping into midfield.

I have to say, where we are in midfield, and Trent is one of the best right-backs in the world going forward. Possibly the best right-back in the world going forward. But defensively he needs protection at times.

He’s still very young and learning his trade in many ways. I’ve always thought he’s got to stick at right-back but where we are, we’ve got Joe Gomez who can play right-back. We’ve got the young lads Ramsay and Bradley who look promising.

There wouldn’t be any harm in looking at Trent in that position for future reference. Some of his touches and some of his play was absolutely top drawer in there.

He’s a player, I’ve seen him play in midfield for Liverpool Under-21s and in the Academy in his early years. He can play in there. Having seen him in that sort of position and how comfortable he was, you wonder how far Jurgen might take it and if he’ll have a real look at him in midfield for future reference.

I don’t know, it’s an interesting one because earlier on, last season, I’d have said ‘Nah, stick to right-back,’ because he was that good there. But there’s no harm in having a little look because in midfield we need him.

We need an overhaul next year. In which form, I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see. Bellingham would be lovely, and you work it out from there. But we’ll have to wait and see. We’re a little bit like a jigsaw puzzle now for next year.

Firmino will be missed as Liverpool rue missed chances

It was a fantastic header from Bobby. We'll miss him when he leaves. When he came on, he made a difference. He’s been great for the club.

Everyone wishes him all the best. Hopefully he can keep putting in good cameos and keep getting us some needed points until the end of the season. He’s been fantastic for the club, he really has been a great player.

He stepped up when the finishing from others was lacking. You’ve got to try and keep your composure. You have to be alert and react as quickly as possible.

Konate, he’s a centre-half. It was a sitter and he’s gone to try and chest it in. Unfortunately it didn’t work out for him, but he’s a centre-half. At least he got in there to be fair.

Nunez, he had quite a few chances to be honest. He was snatching at them. Mo could have had four or five if he’s on top form. But he wasn’t. In front of goal he wasn’t in top form. That’s unfortunate because that was a game we could have won 4-3 or 4-2, or 5-2 or 5-3. It was just one of those games.
