'I hated my engagement ring - I made my fiancé get me a new one a week later'

Shopping for an engagement ring is no easy task - especially when your partner knows exactly what they want from the sparkly diamond jewellery but you have to buy it without their guidance so you can still surprise them with it.

And as it can be daunting to part ways with hard-earned cash on a ring, you usually expect your partner to be thrilled with the purchase, even if it's not entirely to their taste.

But one woman on TikTok has confessed she absolutely "hated" the ring her now-husband gave her when he proposed - and she confronted him a week later to ask him to get her a different one.

The woman said she knew she was opening herself up to "hate" by sharing her story online, but insisted she and her husband Patrick are still happily married and no feelings were hurt by her request for a new ring.

In the video, posted to the woman's @beefinnagain account, she said: “I'm probably gonna get a lot of hate for this and honestly, I'm okay with that. I'm aware that I'm a lot and Patrick's aware that I’m a lot, and here we are four years later, so it's fine.

“Patrick and I dated for like a good bit of time and the whole time we dated I was like, in the marriage headspace and I was like, ‘Pat, I want a ring with a halo’. I want the little diamonds around the main ring. That's what I want.

“I kept emphasising. I was like, ‘I don't care about the size of the diamond. I don't care. I don't care about clarity or cut. I literally don't care. I just want a halo around a little inside diamond’."

When the time came for Patrick to get down on one knee, he failed to consult any of the women in his family to make sure he was buying the right ring - and ultimately picked out a princess cut diamond that was completely different to the one his then-girlfriend had been hoping for.

The woman added: “He did not ask anyone. He did not ask my mum. He did not ask my best friend. He did not ask his sisters, his mum, no one, and the time comes and he proposed and it literally was a princess cut diamond with no halo.

“It was a beautiful diamond, but it's just not what I wanted. And so after he proposed, I literally like went home and my mum asked if I liked the ring, and I bawled. I said, ‘No, I hate it so much and I have to wear it forever’."

The woman was convinced by her mum to give the ring "five years" before she asked Patrick to replace it, but she was only able to last a week before she cracked - because people kept asking her if it was what she wanted.

She said: “My mum told me to give it five years. She said, ‘after like five years you can ask him to replace it’.

"It lasted a week because literally when you're engaged, everyone's like, ‘is it the diamond you wanted? Like, is it perfect? Do you love the ring?’

“And every time I had to be like ‘yeah, oh my gosh, yeah.’ And then I would go and cry because it's just not what I wanted.

“So after like a week I like called him and was like, ‘hey, this is gonna be a hard pill to swallow. I hate the ring. It's just not what I wanted and I'm willing to wait for something that I do want, but I just need you to know that.’ "

The couple later went out to shop for a ring together, and the woman's husband ended up spending twice as much money on the new ring.

She said: “All’s well in the world, he was able to get a refund and like, swap it out. And it was fine.

“Then I made him pay double on the new ring because he took me to the store and I told him what I liked.

“So anyway, we're still happily married and he still knows I'm very opinionated.”
