Katie Melua has spoken out about the fertility struggles she faced before giving birth to her son at age 38.
She welcomed her first child, a baby boy named Sandro, back in December, but has admitted that she didn’t know if motherhood was on the cards for her.
Melua said she was hoping for children from the age of 26 but didn’t end up giving birth until more than a decade later.
“I had 12 years of worrying,” Melua, 38, told HELLO!. “I wanted to have a baby from about the age of 26 and I had him when I was 38, so that’s a good 12 years of worrying.
“There was a period of trying and that didn’t work out. I thought fertility was maybe an issue.”
The musician was married to World Superbike racer James Toseland in 2012 to 2020.
She found love again with the father of her child, whose identity remains private, soon after the divorce.
Melua, who described her son as “the biggest sunshine” in her life and that motherhood “feels like a dream”, also admitted that she had doubts about finding love after her marriage split.
“I thought maybe monogamy isn’t for everyone,” she said, but added that her new relationship following the heartbreak has been “magical”.
Melua announced the birth of Sandro on Instagram in December, sharing a post which included pictures of the baby’s feet, and part of his face.
