"I guess he got one big call right...": Social media reacts as Boris Johnson agrees to resign as Prime Minister

Social media has reacted to the news that Boris Johnson has agreed to resign as Prime Minister of the UK.

Mr Johnson is due to publicly announce his resignation later today, according to the BBC, following a record number of resignations in his Conservative government over the last 48 hours.

It comes after the the PM's handling of the sex scandal around deputy chief whip Chris Pincher earlier this week. The revelation that he know about claims against Pincher, but still promoted him, then 'forgot' he'd been told, was the last straw for many Tories.

The crisis was triggered on Tuesday when Chancellor Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid paved the way for a wave of Tory resignations - which have continued this morning.

According to No 10 sources, Mr Johnson has spoken to the Tory 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady and agreed to stand down, with a new Tory leader set to be in place by the party conference in October, a No 10 source said.

As news of his resignation broke, thousands of people have taken to social media to share their thoughts. The decision has divided many people into two camps - those who thought he should stay and those pleased to see him gone.

One M.E.N reader said on Facebook: "Sneaky move by the new chancellor. Gets the job and then tells Boris to go. Can't trust any of them. Get 'em all out."

Another wrote: "Be careful of what we wish for. Better the devil you know … looking at the contenders there isn’t a decent one amongst them. One reader added: "About time but the worry is who next!!"

Another said: "Had to. The pressure had mounted far too much. 50 MPs resigning is a pretty much a big hint for him to go!"

Others have called for a full general election, with one reader writing: "Sick of getting PMs we haven't voted for. (Aware the last general bozza won, but that's only because of the Labour leader) but we didn't vote for May, didn't vote for Bojo. The only one that got elected fair and square was Cameron."

On Twitter, Sathnam Sanghera wrote: "I guess Boris Johnson got one big call right, eventually." Another disagreed, tweeting: "Can't believe he's let down 14 million people like that. So selfish."

Another said: "I think it is a big mistake getting rid of Boris Johnson - He has done great things for this country." One woman tweeted: " S o we have to put up with Boris Johnson until October!!!are you kidding me!!! pass me the vodka."

And the RMT Union said: "So, the Prime Minister is going. But also staying. How does that work when he doesn't have a functioning government? Asking for a nation."

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said it was "good news" that Boris Johnson is resigning but "we don’t need to change the Tory at the top – we need a proper change of government."
