'I found some flaws in this £28 viral foundation but it really evened my complexion'

I decided to give the Dcypher foundation a go. At 42 my skin is showing its first signs of ageing, and on top of that I’ve got hormonal skin changes to deal with such as acne and oily/dry combination skin. I also recently noticed that the foundation I had been using for seven years (Estee Lauder Double Wear) no longer felt the same on my skin, nor did it give me the coverage it once used to, so it was definitely time to find something new.

I scanned my face via the Dcypher website for it to pick up my skin tone and determine what shade of foundation I would require. I struggled to find good lighting in my house trying several locations, eventually the face scanner picked up what it needed. I then waited three days for my foundation to arrive in the post.

The packaging was cute, but as soon as I removed the pump bottle, I could already see that the foundation shade wasn’t going to be a flawless match.

It glided onto my skin with ease and once fully applied, it was obvious the shade wasn’t a perfect match, neither did it give me full coverage, which is what I like my foundation to do.

That said, it did feel nice, light and smooth on my skin, and it did give me a little glow.

The biggest downside was that I apparently ‘looked like a pumpkin’, according to my 10-year old daughter, and I had to agree. The shade was more of an orange than it was a light brown, which tells me the foundation’s undertone was red and not the yellow that it should have been.

I wore the foundation for well over eight hours, and it felt nice and light on the skin and definitely not caked on, but unfortunately at around the five hour mark I noticed that I no longer had an orange hue and I in fact no longer had any foundation on at all - it had oiled its way off my face.

Thankfully Dcypher’s returns and exchange policy allows you to request an alteration to the shade and product for free if you’re unhappy with your product.

All you need to do is contact the brand by email at help@dcypher.me and they’ll arrange a new product to be sent out to you, so that’s exactly what I did.

I requested a shade lighter than I had with a yellow undertone and my brand new bottle of Dcypher foundation arrived within two days. I applied it to my face and the match was spot on! It gave me far better coverage and evened out my skin tone and stayed on my skin for what felt longer than the last time.

It’s a nice, lightweight foundation with even coverage. I would say it’s good for daytime use and for anyone wanting a natural look. It would have been perfect if it included an SPF.

For anyone wanting full glam, this may not be what you’re after, and for the £28 price tag, I’m not so sure if I would opt for this way of finding the perfect colour match again. However it’s a great concept if you struggle to find the right shade time after time - so I would say that it’s definitely worth giving a try.
