I found a £55 River Island denim dress that 'flatters my shape perfectly'

If you, like me, have avoided denim dresses for a good few years because you're scared of it being too tight or unflattering, look no further.

I took a trip to River Island the other day and wasn't expecting to come out with a denim dress - but I'm so glad I did. Being 5'3 and reasonably curvy, I can often feel quite self conscious in tighter dresses.

That's why as soon as I saw the Blue Denim Mini Dress at my local River Island store, I'll be honest, I didn't think it was going to look good at all. Since a young age I've always been conscious of tight fitting dresses, so when I tried this on, I was absolutely stunned.

The first thing I noticed was the thickness and stretchiness of the dress, the denim wasn't too thick, but it was thick enough to flatter and smooth down any lumps and bumps. I went for a size 12 which was just about right if you don't mind it being a little 'figure hugging' though I'd recommend sizing up if you prefer a looser fit.

As soon as I put the dress on I felt amazing. The denim colour was light and summery, and looked great with some fresh fake tan. I've always found River Island clothes a little hit and miss in terms of sizing, so I was surprised that I managed to even do up this dress at all.

There was just one issue about the dress - the buttons. If you have reasonably long nails like myself, it might be a bit of a challenge when doing up the buttons, but it wasn't the end of the world for me once I eventually got there.

I couldn't resist purchasing the dress (Emily Sleight/ Liverpool ECHO)

As soon as I slipped into the dress I felt instantly confident. For once, I actually liked my curves in a tight fitting dress, which is quite the miracle if you ask me.

Priced at a hefty £55, I was slightly put off by the price, but the sheer quality and finish of the mini dress made the urge to purchase it even stronger before leaving the store. The dress includes chest pockets and short sleeves with a nice thick collar, and can definitely be dressed up or down.

At the time when I trying it on, I was wearing my Dr. Martens sandals, but the mini dress could easily be paired up with some colourful heels and matching bags which is how I plan to wear it for a family birthday meal in a few weeks.

For years I've avoided denim dresses due to feeling uncomfortable and unconfident, but this River Island denim dress made me feel genuinely confident. The gorgeous denim colour combined with its flattering abilities makes this one of my favourite dresses of the summer - I just wish I'd discovered it sooner!

The Blue Denim Mini Dress is currently available in sizes 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18. You can find out more, or purchase the £55 dress here.
