I finally tried Nate Berkus' 'game-changing' fridge organizing solution – it's one of the best things I've ever bought for my home

Nate Berkus.

Many people might laugh 'fridgescaping' off as a ridiculous social media trend. However, knowing how to organize a fridge is a useful skill that will reduce food waste and help you save money. The fact that an organized fridge can also be aesthetically pleasing is just an added bonus.

I am quite a maximalist (I like things) when it comes to my home, so finding a small storage solution that keeps me in check is one of those life missions I have never quite mastered – until now!

Interior design maestro Nate Berkus never fails to deliver on his promises. His home – if you haven't seen it, you should – is a thing of beauty. So when he launched Nate Home by Nate Berkus, everyone told me I should try the 2-Tier Sliding Plastic Pull-Out Drawer Organizer, available on Amazon. Little did I know this nifty system would forever change my organizational habits for the better.

The pull-out caddies have made a massive difference to how I organize my refrigerator. I've put the containers in the middle shelf and have used them to group together food types that I access most often, or those that get easily bruised by being squashed – herbs, vegetables and eggs, for example. Previously, all my herbs and vegetables were (I hate to admit) tightly packed in the salad crisper drawer. So far, this new organizing system is working like a dream.

If you need any more convincing to try this organizing solution, I've picked the brains of some of the best experts in the business for their thoughts.

‘A properly organized fridge can save you money and keep you healthy by preventing the growth of bacteria. It can also reduce the amount of food you throw out,’ says Joe Authbert, buying manager at ProCook. ‘Organizing the contents of your fridge is also recommended to allow foods to last longer.’

Stackable glass containers with plastic lids are ideal for storing food so that it lasts longer. ‘Storage containers make it easier to see what’s inside and offer great versatility. 'Using clear stackable containers allows you to take advantage of all the available vertical space in an often narrow or small refrigerator,’ says Joanna Teplin, one half of the organizing duo, The Home Edit.

Finally, if you also use this storage solution when organizing kitchen drawers, kitchen cabinets, and kitchen countertops – just try not to overfill these spaces.

‘A well-organized refrigerator is one that does its job properly and keeps food fresher for longer, ultimately reducing food waste,’ says Valerie Posner, cooling manager at Bosch Home Appliances. A key tip is not to pack food in so much that the air can’t circulate and the contents won’t keep as cool. This could reduce the lifespan of your products.
