‘I don’t want rules’: Lizzo reveals she doesn’t believe in monogamy

Lizzo has admitted she doesn’t believe in monogamy and revealed that traditional relationships scare her.

The About Damn Time singer explained that while she is not polyamorous, the idea of being with one person forever makes her feel “a little claustrophobic” and she wants a relationship with “no rules”.

Speaking to the Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM hosted by DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God and Angel Yee, the 34-year-old began: "I think a traditional relationship scares me for 10 years, but love is forever. I can love somebody forever.

"Monogamy, I think to me, is a little claustrophobic — I think because there’s the rules.

"I think a love relationship that’s not monogamous has no rules. I think people who do poly and all that stuff — there’s still rules. I don’t want any rules."

The Juice hitmaker, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, also discussed her romance with her partner, Myke Wright, who she went public with last month and said knowing each other before her fame has been an important foundation.

"I have the most genuine people around me," she added. "They don’t give a s**t about ‘Lizzo’ with the chain on. They care about ‘Melissa’, and everyone I’m close with has known me before all of this happened and I think that’s important.

"Even the man I’m with, he knew me before all of this too. We were friends. It hit different when they knew you before 2019."

The Grammy-winning artist added that learning to accept love has changed her perspective on life and saved her from ending up in a “lonely, anxious place”.

She then added that said being in a relationship without rules doesn’t mean she is “out here f***ing and sucking and ducking”.

"It doesn’t mean he is either. It just means that there are no expectations, and that way, the love gets to just be the main event,” Lizzo continued.

"As long as you love me, I’m cool. It doesn’t mean he is either. It just means that there are no expectations, and that way, the love gets to just be the main event."

When asked what she would do if her partner wanted a monogamous relationship, she responded: "We can still have that — just not call it monogamy."
