'I don't understand how they can leave people living like this': Young mum's disgust as she finds sewage leaking outside her flat's door

A young mother says she reported raw sewage leaking from a waste pipe inside a complex of flats six times in the last year. Courtney Lee, 23, says she has endured the stench from the pipe outside the front door of her Silverdale flat in Swinton, Salford, since she moved in four years ago, but still it hasn't been fixed.

She says she stepped up her bid to get the problem fixed with her housing association within the last year when ‘solid’ raw sewage started emanating from the pipe. Workers from landlord ForHousing have visited the two-storey block and put duct tape around the pipe to try to quell the flow of foul sewage, she added.

“It’s disgusting,” she told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). “I’ve reported it repeatedly.

"I don’t understand how they can leave people living like this.” Courtney has two children aged six and nine months. “Living like this with young children is appalling,” she added.

Nigel Sedman, Executive Director of Homes for ForHousing, said: “We have met with Ms. Lee to apologise for the delay in completing this work.

“Due to the nature of the work, our contractor had to engage the services of a specialist asbestos company. Unfortunately, communication issues between the two contractors have resulted in the work taking longer than we expect.

“A temporary fix of the pipe and a full clean-up of the area has been carried out today and work to replace the damaged section of the pipe will be completed early next week.

“We will meet again with tenants next week to ensure that they are satisfied that the works are completed. We will again apologise for any inconvenience this has caused them and their families.”
