'I don't think' - Real Madrid Champions League match-winner makes Liverpool claim before final

Former Real Madrid striker Pedja Mijatovic doesn't believe Liverpool are a better team than the La Liga champions.

The two sides will meet later this month in the Champions League final in Paris, four years after they faced each other in the 2018 showpiece in Kyiv. Madrid were victorious on that occasion, but Liverpool will hope to walk away with the trophy this time around.

In order to reach the final, the Spanish club have had to overcome difficult opposition, including Premier League leaders Manchester City at the semi-final stage. Pep Guardiola's side appeared to have got the job done in the second leg at the Bernabeu but a stoppage-time brace from Rodrygo turned the tie on its head.

Karim Benzema then went on to score the winner from the penalty spot in extra-time, booking Madrid's place the final and moving them within touching distance of a fourteenth European Cup. Liverpool, though, will hope to secure number seven in the French capital.

Mijatovic made 118 appearances for Los Blancos between 1996 and 1999 and scored the winner in the 1998 Champions League final to beat Juventus. He says 'nobody' is able to compete with the current Madrid team, though.

In an interview with El Larguero. the 1997 Ballon d'Or runner-up said: “I don’t remember a game like the one against Manchester City. The energy of the people and the players was incredible. I hadn’t seen anything like it at the Bernabeu.

“What team in Europe has eight players with four Champions Leagues? It’s very difficult to achieve what Real Madrid has. I don’t think Liverpool has a better team. Nobody has one as complete as Real Madrid.”

The Reds last won the competition in 2019 by beating English rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid. In the last two seasons, however, their Champions League hopes have been ended by Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid respectively in the knockout stages.
