'I don't mean in a vicious way' - Paul Merson makes major Luis Diaz claim after just seven Liverpool games

Liverpool's opponents will now be plotting how to stop Luis Diaz in his tracks, according to Paul Merson.

Colombian Diaz has made an instant impact since joining The Reds from Porto at the end of January, scoring one goal in seven appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side.

The 25-year-old already has a winners' medal in his possession after shining in Liverpool's dramatic Carabao Cup Final triumph over Chelsea last weekend.

But former Arsenal and England star Merson, believes that Diaz' promising start has already put him firmly on the radar of his opponents.

Writing in the Daily Star, Merson said: "Luis Diaz has been so outstanding for Liverpool so far that he is already a marked man.

"He's come in and caught everybody on the hop. Defenders wouldn't have watched him much or known much about him and he's taken them by surprise.

"Now all of a sudden he's on the radar and this is when you've got to produce. He's in opposition team talks now.

"When teams are discussing how to set up against Liverpool and who to stop, it's not just Salah and Mane and Jota they're talking about. It's Luis Diaz.

"So it's a different game for him now and this is where we are going to see what he's made of. The top players carry it on.

"He will be a marked man. I don't mean in a vicious way but teams will adjust and try to stop him."

Diaz has already played more regularly for Liverpool than had perhaps been anticipated, bucking the trend by Jurgen Klopp of bedding players such as Fabinho, Naby Keita and Andy Robertson into the first team.

But with 21 goals in all competitions for club and country so far this season, the winger's impressive statistics are seemingly to good to ignore.

Initially considered a target for the summer, Liverpool accelerated their move for Diaz when it became apparent that Tottenham were moving in on the player, but the Reds' decisiveness to get the deal done in January appears to be paying off already.

Merson added: "What I've seen so far, I've been majorly impressed. His first touch, his movement, his team play, his work ethic, finishing, his skills. Everything about him has been outstanding.

"He's going to be massively important to them now for the rest of the season because they don't have a chance of winning a Quadruple unless everyone is on top of their game."
