'I couldn't have been any lower' – Cardiff City's Jordan Hugill opens up on West Brom hell and his perfect response to that celebration

Jordan Hugill revealed he moved to Cardiff City because he needed some love after hitting rock bottom at West Brom.

The striker announced himself in dream fashion when he hit the back of the net just five minutes into his Bluebirds debut on Sunday afternoon..

Cardiff ran out eventual winners, with Isaak Davies scoring the second in a 2-1 win to cap off the perfect start to life in the Welsh capital for the Norwich City loanee.

And it was just what the doctor ordered for the 29-year-old because, as he said himself, his first half of the season was miserable. He played only a bit-part under Valerien Ismael at The Hawthorns and admitted he could not have been much lower.

"I'm a fighter, I was born a fighter. I've fought for everything I've got in my life," he said, explaining the move to south Wales.

"I never turn down a challenge and I looked at the team here, I know what kind of club Cardiff is and it just got me going.

"The manager instilled some confidence in me that I've been lacking due to certain things going on this season, not playing for a long time.

"I needed [Steve Morison] to put some confidence in me, tell me I was his first target and that was it, that sold it for me.

"After not playing for a long time... I don't think I could have been any lower towards the back end of the first six months (of the season).

"Things weren't working out for me and to get that goal was just more relief than anything.

"There are certain things that went on that are not for me to say. It is what it is. I just knew I had a lot of people to prove wrong this year and this second half of the season, I can't wait for it."

He had an honest conversation with Norwich City boss Dean Smith before the Canaries decided to cut his Baggies loan short and send him down to Cardiff.

Morison had registered his interest in Hugill at the beginning of the transfer window, after he noticed the striker was not involved when Cardiff played the Baggies at the start of the month.

The manager made no secret of his desire to bring Hugill to Cardiff City Stadium and that confidence was exactly what Hugill needed.

"For him to say I was his No.1 target and for the manager to be a striker himself, I remember seeing him play, we are similar," Hugill said of Morison.

"It was good for me to rebuild my confidence and get back on track. I believe, more importantly, even if I didn't score the goal I was really happy with the performance.

"I pride myself on my performance more than anything. I know I can score goals, if and when it is needed, but more importantly I am a big, big team player.

"If I get my performances right I know the goals will come."

Hugill said he wants to show Dean Smith at Norwich that he can be ready to play a part for the Canaries next season.

To do that, he will need to rack up the goals tally and put in a string of positive performances throughout the back half of the campaign.

And he has started in perfect fashion with that goal against Forest, which preceded a pretty pointed celebration during which he cupped both hands behind his ears.

"What a start! Absolutely delighted to get off to that start!! What a result and performance from everyone!!" Hugill wrote on Twitter.

"Not bad for someone who can ‘only play in the cold weather and on rubbish pitches’."

When quizzed on the celebration, though, the forward issued the perfect response.

"The people who know, know about it."
