Horrified eyewitnesses heard 'screaming' after a woman was hit by a car on a busy main road in Openshaw on Tuesday afternoon (July 4).
An air ambulance landed in a car park nearby as police and paramedics swarmed Ashton Old Road following reports of a woman being hit by a car outside The Manchester College campus.
The road remained closed for a number of hours on Tuesday amid investigations as the woman, approximately aged in her 20s, was treated at the roadside next to a bus stop before being rushed to hospital from the scene with a serious head injury.

Witnesses reported hearing 'screaming' as a heavy police presence descended on the busy main road. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 12.40pm.
Atila Teixeira, 25, who owns Cabral’s, a Brazilian restaurant and takeaway beside the college said: “I came just a few minutes after it happened. There was one marked and one unmarked police car which were the first on the scene.
“Then about five or 10 minutes after that a small ambulance came, then the helicopter came. It landed on a car park off Ashton Old Road.
“Then ambulance vans arrived as well. As soon as you see the helicopter you start to think ‘oh it must be bad’ so that was worrying. I could hear her screaming and at one point they put up screens whilst they moved her. I just hope she’s okay and makes a recovery.”
A resident who lives nearby to the scene said: “I was at a hospital appointment and came back about 2pm and there was police everywhere and the road was closed. There were at least three or four police cars and vans as well.
“It was a hell of a shock. Then police officers came round and asked if we had cameras, so I knew it must have been bad. You can imagine what it’s like this road in the morning with cars coming and people crossing the roads. It’s terrible as it’s such a busy road.”
Police said they were called to the scene by paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service shortly after 12.40pm. The woman was said to have been 'conscious and breathing' when crews arrived.
A man, aged in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He remains in police custody for questioning.
