We all have our favourite chocolate bars – in fact deciding which is the best can cause quite a bit of debate.
However, according to a 2020 study by the British Heart Foundation, Snickers bars were voted the nation's favourite, closely followed by Cadbury Dairy Milk and Galaxy.
Whether you think it should claim the top spot or not it's clear that Snickers bars are incredibly popular with supermarkets putting out their own brands of peanut, caramel, and nougat bars at cheaper prices.
But how exactly do these own-brand bars compare to the classic Snickers? I set out to find out just that by tucking into what two supermarkets had to offer to see how they compared to the original.
Snickers - £1.25 for four
At Tesco, a four-pack of Snickers will cost you £1.25, working out at roughly 31p per bar. In terms of taste the Snickers bar provides soft nougat with the peanuts and chocolate adding a good crunch and the caramel bringing a slightly salty flavour to counteract the sweetness of the rest of the bar. It's a family favourite chocolate bar but also the most expensive on the list, providing less bars for more money compared to the Aldi and Lidl own-brands.
Score: 4/5

Aldi Racer - 62p for four
A pack of six Racer bars cost an amazing 62p – half the price of a four-pack of Snickers at Tesco. The Racer bars are roughly the same size as a Snickers bar with the Snickers bar being only slightly wider. The distribution of the layers of caramel and nut and nougat were also pretty much equal between the two different brands. The Aldi Racer bar had about the same amount of peanuts as a Snickers bar though the chocolate coating on the outside was slightly thinner – but only just. The Racer bar has a chewier texture than the Snickers bar but still provides a good crunch and has pretty much the same distribution of peanuts.
Score: 5/5
Lidl Mister Choc Peanut and Choco – 62p for four
A pack of six Peanut and Choco bars from Lidl were also 62p, matching the price of the Aldi Racer bars. However the bars were also a little smaller than the Racer and Snickers bars. The layer of nougat in the Peanut and Choco bar was also thinner than the Snickers and Racer bars. The texture of the chocolate bar was more similar to a Snickers than the Racer however the nougat tasted a little different. While the bars match the price of Aldi's Racers they're smaller in size.
Score: 3/5
You really can't beat the taste of a Snickers – out of all the bars I tried it was my favourite in terms of taste with the caramel in the Aldi and Lidl bars not quite providing the same flavour. However, when price is factored in, the Aldi and Lidl brands definitely offer you more for your money. I found that the Racer bar was slightly closer in terms of matching the taste of a Snickers bar with the distribution of nuts, caramel, and nougat being almost identical. While the Peanut and Choco bars were the same price for the same number of bars as the Racer bars sold at Aldi they were slightly smaller. So while I still think the Snickers came out on top in terms of taste I think Aldi's Racer bars are definitely best in terms of their value for money providing a good-sized bar that was full of flavour.
