I compared Nutella to Nutoka from Aldi and the differences are tiny

For years, Nutella has been king of the chocolate spreads. Its thick, nutty, chocolatey goodness has been slapped over bread, toast and cakes - or just eaten straight out of the jar - by Brits for years.

But there is a new kid on the block. Aldi's Nutella dupe 'Nutoka' recently went viral on Twitter for looking very similar to Nutella, the LiverpoolEcho reported.

Many shoppers took to Twitter claiming after trying both, they couldn't tell which one was which, so I decided to give it a try. The Nutoka Chocolate Spread comes in a 400g jar and is priced at £1.45 in Aldi.

Funnily enough, Aldi's version was plonked right next to the original Nutella at my local Aldi, which made it super easy to conjure up a taste test. I could only get my hands on a larger jar of Nutella priced at £4.39 for 630g - but I definitely wasn't complaining, because I absolutely adore Nutella.

On the Ocado website, a 350g jar is priced at £3.20, making it better value for money already. In terms of aesthetics, both jars looked virtually identical with a few tiny differences in terms of the label and colouring - but more importantly, did they taste different?

The taste

Of course, the Nutella had that classic indulgent chocolatey taste that we all know and love, which came as no surprise. For me, Nutella is something I can eat over and over again with a spoon, because it's super addictive.

The consistency of the Nutella was very thick and creamy, but it was still nice and gooey, which is just one of the things I love about it. After trying not to eat the whole jar, it was time to try the Nutoka.

The first thing I noticed about the Nutoka was the difference in consistency, it was a lot grainier than the Nutella and a little more 'claggy' as opposed to smooth like the Nutella. In terms of the taste, there were also some subtle differences, but as a whole it still tasted really good.

Aldi's Nutoka wasn't as strong as the Nutella in terms of the initial nutty chocolate taste, but it was still delicious and sweet. For those who aren't a huge fan of that strong nutty flavour, the Nutoka could definitely be a good alternative.

As a whole, the difference between the two chocolate spreads was absolutely miniscule, and if you're wanting to save a bit of extra money, I think the swap to Aldi is way worth it.

The Nutoka just lacks that smooth consistency ever so slightly, but would probably still be easy to spread on some toast or pancakes. It's not as rich as the original Nutella, but it still tastes very similar.

The verdict

I personally don't think I'll be swapping to the Aldi Nutoka, purely because I don't buy Nutella that often, so I don't mind forking out an extra couple of pounds to do so. For those who buy chocolate spread on a regular basis and are looking to save a bit of money here and there, the Nutoka is definitely worth it.

The differences between the two were tiny, with the Aldi Nutoka being slightly more grainy and less strong in terms of flavour. However, that doesn't mean that it wasn't incredibly similar to the original Nutella.
