Easter is just over a month away, meaning it is almost that time of year when we can be a bit overindulgent with our love for everything chocolate.
From chocolate in the shape of eggs, bunnies and chicks to the vast variety of Mini Eggs and Creme Eggs, there is certainly a lot that you can find on any supermarket and store shelf right now.
Quite frankly, it's hard not to like this time of year unless you don't like chocolate - if so, who even are you?
For me, I have a slight preference for those bags of mini chocolate eggs because I always find them easier to snack on and you don't have to wrap them back up all the time like you have to for a giant egg.
And there is one luxurious brand that I often don't mind splurging out a bit more on at this time of year, and that's Lindt.
Even though the fancy chocolate company is a little more on the pricier side, they are undeniably a fan-favourite for anyone looking for indulgent treats at this time of year.
From their iconic gold bunnies to their vast selection of irresistibly smooth chocolate eggs, the chocolatier has all the goods to make anyone feel indulgent at Easter.
But, considering the rising cost of living, I always wondered if paying £2 for a very small bag of chocolate eggs was really worth the money.
With the cost of living continuing to rise more and more, I decided to see if any supermarkets own-brand bags of mini chocolate eggs were worth buying to save the extra pennies.
Which is why I grabbed a bag of my favourite Lindt milk chocolate eggs and then visited Lidl, Morrisons and Sainsbury's for their own versions.
Let's see who came out on top...
What did I try?
Now, I know that quite a few of you may be thinking that chocolate is quite hard to review, and I would have to agree with you right there.
However, I devised a plan for each bag of chocolate eggs, as I based the reviews around taste, the size of the bags, size of the eggs and how many eggs the bags contained.
These were the options I tried.
- Lindt Lindor milk chocolate eggs 80g - £2
- Lidl Favorina Milk Chocolate Eggs 200g - £1.59
- Morrisons Mini Milk Chocolate Eggs 84g - 80p
- Sainsbury's Milk Chocolate Eggs 85g - 80p
Lindt
First things first, I needed to start this review with a reference for quality, so I began with one of Lindt mini eggs before any other.
Taste: These eggs may be small, but they are certainly still mighty. Even after just one, I am instantly reminded why I love Lindt chocolate - it's rich, smooth and it never leaves your mouth feeling dry, which I have found some chocolate to be an offender for.
It also has the melted smooth filling that instantly adds a creamy effect to the overall taste and, I'll admit, that it's hard to match.
Size of the bag and eggs: Considering a small 80g bag costs £2, I have to admit that they are a bit on the pricier side compared to some others, as all the other alternatives I found were cheaper.
I also forgot that the size of the eggs were relatively small, meaning they are gone in literally one bite, so maybe not good for when you are really hungry or have kids!
Total amount of eggs: I can't say that I ever paid attention to this one before, but I did find that the small packet meant there were not a huge ton of contents. I did find that they were on par with some of the smaller bags that were priced at around 80p!
Lidl
I decided to start the taste with Lidl, because the budget supermarket has rarely made a misstep for anyone looking for great quality and low prices.
I will admit, that even though this bag cost just £1.59, I was still surprised at the price when compared to other supermarket offerings.
Taste: As far as the taste of the milk chocolate eggs go, they were exactly what you'd expect and tasted exactly like milk chocolate. I can't say that they really stood out in terms of taste, especially as Lindt has their own significant taste.
Size: Honestly, this is where the supermarket came out on top form, because they were 40p cheaper than Lindt's bag for a 200g bag. I would say that is good value for money.
Total: As well as giving me a larger sized bag for less, there were also a ton of little eggs packed into the one packet, meaning I got a lot more in the packet for my money.
Overall a good start in terms of value.
Morrisons
Next up was Morrisons, which is the supermarket I rarely shop at these days, but I am yet to be fully disappointed with them and regularly get decent buys.
Taste: Like the previous offering these tasted exactly like milk chocolate, but I did find Morrisons to be a lot smoother than Lidl's chocolate, as well as being a bit creamier.
Size: This bag was just slightly bigger than Lindt's at 84g, but they were also half the price and the eggs were bigger, so it instantly wins points there.
Total: I must admit that, despite being just heavier than the bag of Lindt chocolage eggs, there were significantly less in Morrisons, which was a bit of a bummer as they tasted really nice.
Sainsbury's
Last, but certainly not least, was Sainsbury's with their 85g bag of mini chocolate eggs, which I think were arguably my favourite from the supermarkets.
Taste: I instantly found the chocolate to be the smoothest and richest out of the three supermarket and, despite being the smallest, they certainly made an impression. The chocolate was also slightly thicker, meaning I got a bit more of a bite.
Size: Again, it was a standard 85g bag, but I will admit that the eggs were rather small, which I am glad the taste made up for. I did also notice that there were significantly more in this bag than compared to Morrisons, which was the same weight.
Total: Sainsbury's also made up for the size of the eggs, not just in taste, but with the amount of eggs that you got for just 80p.
Overall verdict
At the end of the day, despite being a wee bit pricier, Lindt chocolate still arguably wins in terms of taste and it really is no competition.
That being said, the supermarkets did put up a good fight with their own-branded chocolate mini eggs, and I can't say that I was fully disappointed in any of them.
If we're judging by good value for money, then Lidl's £1.59 for 200g arguably takes the top spot. There's a larger bag that you can share - or scoff to yourself - and the mini eggs are slightly larger.
They also come in cute colourful packaging, which is perfect for Easter.
However, the best taste from the own-brands has to go arguably go to Sainsbury's, whose small but mighty milk chocolate eggs were smooth, light and creamy.
And, at 80p, I'm hardly going to complain at that.
Morrisons own Mini Milk Chocolate Eggs at 80p were also good, though the chocolate was a little on the lighter side, and I wish the quantity was more on par with Sainsbury's.
I did also find that all the supermarket's mini chocolate Easter eggs came in cute bright colours, and I am always here for a pop of colour for Spring time!
