I bought some Lidl Christmas biscuits and its gingerbread train kit is incredible value for money

It's that time of year when you're allowed to add some extra bits to your food shop.

There's no doubt that families are struggling this year, but many people will be spending a little extra on some treats for the festive season.

That's why I decided to pop into Lidl to see what's available in the Christmas aisle - and I have to say it was pretty impressive.

There are loads of Christmas biscuits in store (Manchester Family / MEN)

With its German labels it can often be difficult to tell exactly what you're buying.

I wasn't really familiar with Lebkuchen, but a quick Google told me it's a honey-sweetened German cake, molded cookie or bar that's become part of Germany's Christmas traditions - and is similar to gingerbread.

I wasn't blown away by these, but my daughter certainly found a new favourite treat in the six-pack of milk chocolate Lebkuchen for £1.29. These seemed to have a bit of a marzipan flavour to them too.

The milk chocolate butter biscuits on the other hand, covered with red, white and green sprinkles, were probably the biggest hit with all of us, at £2.49 a pack, and we all enjoyed the tasty Rudolph cookies, at a bargain £1.99.

But the showstopper had to be the huge gingerbread train kit, which my kids built and decorated.

Ours might not look like the perfect version on the box, but we had fun doing it and you'd struggle to find such a big kit - with all the decorations and icing sugar included - for less than the £5.99 price tag.

Lidl's also selling a gingerbread house kit for the same price, but both are flying off the shelves, so don't leave it too long if you're wanting to get hold of one this Christmas.
