I bought a bed from Wowcher and here is how it went

There are some pieces of advice that have stayed with me because they have just made sense.

One of them is, always get a good pair of shoes and a good bed because if you are not in one, you are in the other. This is partly why you will never catch me in a stiletto or anything that has a kitten heel.

So while I spend my days comfortably in flats, my mattress had come to the end of its life and our bed frame was too big for our room since moving home. In anticipation, I had been browsing shops and the internet for weeks and oh my lord were they coming up expensive.

And if you add the need for a headboard and four drawers, the price can skyrocket. Unwilling to spend over £600 (in many cases £1,000), I turned to Wowcher (well, actually I did look at Amazon first, but they were still pricey).

Wowcher had a number of deals for a whole variety of things from beds and shoes, to afternoon teas and spa breaks. The idea is you buy the voucher (or Wowcher) at their slashed prices and then redeem it for the item, ticket or day trip, similar to how Groupon works.

I will admit, this can be confusing and difficult to navigate and you can sometimes wonder why they bother with the whole redeeming process - but they do have a 14 day money back guarantee on all unredeemed Wowchers. I get why you would want to buy a bed from a shop, you can test out the mattress in store so it was a little daunting to buy one I didn't know the quality of.

But the price was just too good to pass up. I bought the grey divan bed and on Wowcher you can customise it for size, if you want a headboard and if you want drawers.

I opted for the four by six double with headboard and four drawers for £249 - this was a discount of £550. And far cheaper than the beds in store.

You do have to pay for delivery separately - mine was £30, but it still made the bed cost far less than the beds I saw in shops.

The verdict

Delivery was easy to sort and I arranged it for a day I knew I would be home. The delivery driver rang me 40 minutes before he was due to arrive to make sure I was in.

The bed came in two pieces so it was easy and light enough to get up the stairs. It was quick to put together and the drawers had loads of space for all your bedding and has just become some really great storage for us. The headboard is solid and the grey tone is a nice neutral colour to suit most decors.

The mattress is where there may be a slight problem. While it is fine, it is not the same quality as you might find in a bed shop and, as happens with some divan beds, the mattress can move a little and hang over the edge of the bed, but is easily pushed back.

I feel that is to be expected and I am always a fan of a mattress topper anyway to preserve the longevity of your bed, so with one of them on top, it is lovely and soft and I have had five good nights' sleep since (would have been six nights but I have a small child, so it wasn't the mattresses fault).

I do feel that I may need to replace this mattress quicker than I would like (usually a mattress can last between eight and 10 years), perhaps in four years. But the unbeatable price has given me the freedom to look out for a more expensive one when I can afford it in the future - or at least, that is the 'looking on the bright side' thinking I am telling myself.
